8 x 6 trailer design
Long time forum guest here
Trying to design an 8x6 box trailer to build myself with idea of ditching my ute so I can use the trailer on a Pajero - usually for crushed granite, gravel for concreting, rubbish, wood, etc.
was thinking build it to suit 1400 kg atm with single axle mechanical brakes - made from 75x50 rhs. With 2 mm floor and 1.6mm fabricated sides using 25x25mm angle as the framing. Would would like a h frame set up for lengths of timber and steel of course.
Though is it possible to build single axle 2000kg atm trailer? All I can find is tandems in this configuration. If able to do this what axle configuration and a frame size would I go for.
Also have available a set,of mk triton springs and an old 8x6 alloy tray - not a fan of these as end up too high when lifting heave items in and out. I am all ears thanks guys

There are places that seek pre- made trailer plans on eBay. No idea if they are any good. Might pay you to check the regulations in NSW regarding registering home made trailers - they might require an engineers sign off.
Personally if you want 1800kg then I would only be happy with a tandem axle for the additional safety.

You want to start with reading VSB1, it will give you the specifications that need to be met.

2T ATM is achievable with a 50mm square axle and appropriately rated leaf springs
You will need to plate the trailer under 2T to avoid the requirement for breakaway brakes. That is why a lot of trailers available have an ATM of 1990kg.
Checkout somewhere like Huntsman products for kits including axle, brakes/hubs & springs.

Thanks SW have located that site with plenty of interesting items. But build costs estimate adding up - so far have it circa $2200. The online trailer plans site don’t seem to advertise 8 x 6 plans. On further reading of the Rms site if tare comes in under 250kgs then cheaper rego available - but I don’t think that is possible as weight estimate is closer to 205kg plus suspension kit, wheels and hitch. This would be I guess the holy grail and if possible they would already available

Having a read of R6 of the VSB, the drawbar testing would look to be the nail in the coffin for the home made trailer, unless using plans that had some sort of type approval. I imagine that getting a slot at a testing facility will not be coming cheap for someone who wants to make a one-off trailer. There's no allowance for using standard designs.
Similarly, the chain attachment appears to require testing as well.
The placard requirements have also been upped - you now need a placard that dictates the type, size and ratings of the tyres.
None of the above is insurmountable, but it's definitely not as easy as it used to be.
