    Default Query regarding bent towbar

    Hi all,

Just a quick question regarding a bent towbar, I noticed that mine has a slight bow in it on both axis.

I was planning on straightening it though thought I'd ask here first just in case it is meant to be like that.

Where the tongue is it bows in about 3.5mm and on the top face it protrudes about 1mm.

It is a hayman reece. Here are a some of photos that I have taken.

    Any advice would be good.

    Thanks

It's a bit hard to tell too much from your photos, but speaking in a general sense I don't think I'd be too worried. Distortion from welding could easily account for that degree of bend and unless it affects the function of the towbar or there is obvious deformation of the hollow section, the degree of bend you are describing should not cause too much issue, in fact there are quite likely greater discrepancies in the chassis to which it is bolted.

Yeah I'm not too worried about it, but may as well straighten it. Was planning on using chains and a hydraulic cylinder.

Pretty sure it has had a rear end accident which would have caused the bow.

Have straightened a bent tow bar before in a hydraulic press after a rear end accident. Some modern factory bars might be different construction but most of the older ones are just thick wall mild steel.
The one I straightened was also a Hayman Reece.
