    Default Receiver hitch steel dimensions

Bit surprised I wasn't able to find an easy answer to this on the googles.

Is there a right choice of RHS for making hitch receivers? Obviously I could just go and find the best fit on the rack, but I wondered if there's a specific (eg US) size/profile/grade that they use.

I have a couple of spare tongues and a winch box knocking around, that all appear to use 50mm square hollow section. I want to make up a couple of receivers (tractor, trailer etc) for general convenience moving stuff around the farm.

Most people use 50x50x4 RHS for the internal piece and that fits into 65X65X6 RHS beautifully. For farm use anything 4-6mm wall will be fine, with 6mm being more resistant to the hole slogging out under heavy loading.

If you have a tow bar manufacturer near by, they may have the seamless stuff, otherwise it's file and die grinder type of work to remove the seam.

To grow old is mandatory, growing up is optional.

Shouldn't be too big an issue as they don't generally fit that tightly, 65 less 2 times 6 is 53mm which leaves plenty of clearance for a seam.

Thanks guys, sounds straightforward enough. I'll grab some next time I'm in town
