The bunnings brazing rods work i just tested it i only had a small tooth of carbide to test it worked ok wasnt taking off magic amounts of material .2mm at a time so .4mm off the radius pretty poor but it was likely my sharpening that made it not cut properly i couldnt extend the tooth over the front of the hss

The billet and tool stayed cold after 25mins of cutting chips were tiny but again probably my sharpening, the tooth ended up falling off after i ground the tip several times probably bad bonding from my cleaning hard to sand a small 4x2mm tip

If you're limited to 6mm tools, get a 6mm boring bar; they take the same style of insert, just smaller https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/S06K-SCL....c101072.m2109

Trying to braze/solder a tip on is not going to get you anything useful.

Elan i just put it on my watch list once we move i'll order it to the new address i was looking at those over the past few days it would be handy being 125mm long i only need around 70-80mm of depth so that is perfect

Held as a normal turning tool, with minimal overhang, it should be fine for OD work.

Not sure how it will go with boring that deep, especially in steel; the chatter is going to be uncontrollable with anything but the smallest cuts.

Might be worth signing up for an AusPost parcel locker (if there's one near you) https://auspost.com.au/receiving/alt...-parcel-locker

EDIT: The one I linked has 0.4mm radius inserts, if you need 0.2 inserts, look for CCMT060202

We have the keys to the new house and signed the papers sat morning but im just holding off buying anything untill its 100% official and we start to move in

So hard to find 6mm tooling in aus everything is 6mm HSS or it starts at 8mm in carbide

That boring bar is cheap as and has plenty of tips

I am thinking of changing the steel billet to regular mild steel in 70-75mm that way i only need to bore it out to 61.75-61.85mm instead of having to machine the outside too this high tensile stuff is really hard even on the lathes motor

Just taking .02mm cuts the motor slows right down and has stalled but likely to the blunt tool

Regular steel is a piece of cake to machine on this lathe

I just looked up the steel its called "bright mild steel" 1020 grade wonder why i cant machine it if its regular steel i thought it was high tensile

If you can't machine 1020 then I dunno what more advice I can give you.

Plugged some numbers into my calculator and it recommends 700ish RPM for 90mm diameter with coated carbide tips, 180 RPM for plain HSS.

Bugger my belts are on A-2 500rpm i have never really understood those gears in the manual but i think i can work it out now.. that will be why im having problems im spinning at to fast a speed

Someone previously asked about my speed but i was unsure so didnt answer i have never been able to work out that diagram as there are more than 2 pulleys combined

Guys what is with the replies? Im not a engineer in machinery this being my first lathe i dont know all the bells and wistles you guys have had decades in learning i actually feel like not posting to ask questions but its my only line of help

Yeah...that was me. Tools going blunt super quickly is usually a good sign you're running too fast.

I think you'll find that once you start asking questions appropriate to your level of experience, you'll start getting more useful answers. I'm sure most people here are genuinely happy to help beginners, but when you ask how to climb a mountain when you're still figuring out how to walk, the ONLY appropriate response is to talk you out of it in whatever way necessary. It's genuinely for your own good.

Maybe if when people ask a question in a post where you want help you could take the time to work it out and provide an answer, if you don’t understand the question ask for more information.

People are asking questions to help you, ignoring them and the advise provided makes them feel like they are banging their head against a brick wall.
