Tech do u by any chance know what the temp of peeling high tensile steel is on a lathe? That may give me a better indication weather to cool or go a more durable solder

I'll give the copper solder a go soon

Last night i even looked into diamond tips for lathe tools quiet expensive but i bet they dont go blunt

The Aussie guy is one of our own -Rob - his MetalWork Forum screen name nearnexus.

Note that Rob uses a UK made Bull Finch Propane torch.

The torch obviously can reach the required temperature.

The unit is probably worth $400 + these days. Can whatever torch you own do this? The conditions will need to be ideal as it can be difficult to arrive at the needed temperature and then maintain it.

you really need to do more research into some of your ideas. Diamond turning tools wont work in steel, they are used for aluminum.

Just assumed doamonds being the hardest thing on earth it would cut high tensile steel

Anyone know if a 30mm top Crompton lpg blow torch would be hot enough to melt the copper? Its a huge angry blow torch

I do have oxy/acy kit but no tanks

Just wondering, are you going to turn this piece of 90 mm bar at 250 or 500 rpm, are you going to use the .08 feed rate and are you going to put a centre in your bolt mandrel and support it with your Tailstock.

Hey Pipe this is all a bit uncertant to me at the moment my cross slide can only slide under the billet about 20mm unless its around 70mm or smaller

I was trying to kerp the bolt in the center for as long as possible and try machine the inside hole 62mm around the bolt if possible as i dont think i will be able to use the cross slide and tailstock at the same time

You will be at it for a very long time with a lathe like you have,
You have to many limitations on the lathe you have to perform that machining operation.

Yeah i sadly agree Pipe i was sold the wrong material and too big of a material, 95mm width i wanted 85-90mm and i wanted mild steel not high tensile steel

Plan as for now was to machine the outside down to 70-75mm quiet a bit to take off than bore out the inside to something around 61.80mm (bearings are 62mm unmeasured just yet) as a rough figures without measuring the bearings specifically

My machine will happily take off .6mm each cut from muld steel using hss tools that is 1.2mm off the diameter per cut

The other day was my second time ever using auto feed it was a bliss i actually know how to use it now

Just tried to solder the copper wire the tool and wire were glowing red and only the very tip of the wire was melting slowly but yeah not enough heat

The bunnings 5% rod melted but only when the tool was a cherry red

Plan now is to run a bottle with some cool water but i need to look into this as i dont want my lathe rusting..

Unless you use some type of oil coolant the lathe will rust make sure the lathe is coated with oil or grease and clean thoroughly after the job is done.
normally tips are brazed with bronze not silver solder.

Just copying what i seen on youtube by old mate, here is the silver solder i tested a couple days ago and here are the rods from bunnings no idea what the melting point on the bunnings rods are

I will have to look up if bronze can be melted with a mapp torch

Little bit of looking into things the 45% silver rods melt at 700c copper and bronze melt at over 900c so i dont have enough heat for copper or bronze i guess the 45% silver rods are in a way the poormans way to riches but being broke in there cost lol

I'll order one of those 45 silver rods

Actually the bunnings 5% rods have a 850c melting point mine deffinatly melted tonight, 15% melts at 800c, 45% melts at 700c

So the rods i bought may work, wait untill the sun comes up and i'll give it a whirl

Buy a 12mm tool, cut the front off and weld that to some 6mm flat bar?
