Default Flat Top Trailer for the Bush

Last year I brought a Quad Bike and took it out bush in my 10x5 trailer which is just too wide for the bush tracks that I traverse. I decided that I'll build a flat top which I'll eventually enclose to carry the quad and other camping gear and maybe sleep in.

So here's what I did over the xmas break. The tray size is 2.4 x 1.67, it's the same width as the tow vehicle. The wall thickness of all SHS and RHS is 2.5mm. I'll probably use 3mm aluminium checker plate as the deck. Pictures say a thousand words.

    Nice start Rod.

    That's quite a long drawbar..

Have you considered utilising the space between the floor and the base chassis that the springs are mounted to? It'd be a great place to slide a spare wheel into, and also place some lengths of storm water or sewer pipe with screw on end caps for tent/annexe poles.
Too many projects, so little time, even less money!

Yep a water tank or two will be going in that space.

    Good spot for them too.

Interesting choice of spring set. What made you go the parabolics?

I replaced the rear leafs on my Troopy with parabolics about a year ago to which they've been ok and maybe a little more comfortable (not soft) ride, so I thought I'd give em ago on the trailer.

Well here's the finished product road registered. The weight is 420kgs. The rattle of the rear slippers was annoying the hell out of me so on the advice of Martins Tralier parts I installed some nylon packing (its used as slipping on boat trailers).

The panels on the deck is Bondor panelling, I'll be using it to build an enclosed box on the trailer.

Great looking trailer, and didn't take you that long to make either.
What carrying capacity did you end up with?
The plastic slippers are a good idea, just wondering, do you know if a moulded one is available to locate on the hanger on the bottom side of the spring?; of course one would have to have longer legs on the hanger to accommodate plastic pads on both top and bottom. A pad on the bottom maybe wouldn't achieve anything anyway.
Good luck with the rest of the build.

    Cheers

If I'm not right, then I'm wrong, I'll just go bend some more bananas.

Yep its duragal. The paints are Wattyl - etch primer then their heavy duty metal primer followed by two coats of Killrust epoxy enamel. Mind you there are lots of paint runs and drips.

Thats brilliant work. Those bolts holding the teflon wear pads, I would have perhaps used a countersunk head, but I still love it, a fantastic trailer.

Nice trailer Rod, you have a thing for red trailers don't you

You going to be taking it out to wave the magic wand around? Looking at buying one at the moment, might need to hit you up for a few pointers.

    Cheers,
    Burnsy
