Default help me build a basic flat build bed trailer for my kayaks

well i just bought a hobie pro angler at 97cm wide ist to big for the lux's roof.

i was thining a bed 1.2mx 2.4m so ican usea sheet of marine ply with some carpet on top.

the kayak loaded up will be 100kg max

how wide will i need my axle? and what size do i use for the steel? what size wall thickness

also my yak will stick quite a bit over the rear of the traielr that is ok im alloud 1.2m b4 i use a flag them in allound just over 1.6m (accourding to my wheelbase)

    here is a rough pic

its my 1st real welding project since school. also a rough price on steel would be ok.

does any one have those tralier plans taht u can buy online? ive got some but nothing of real use.

    Goodday ,
I have just finished building a boat trailer so I can see what you are doing here,

I suggest that you build this as a box trailer with removable front & rear panels, and sides 400mm high , this will equal 2 sheets of ply , for the base frame, I would look at 50x50 x2/3mm steel the draw bar from the same.

The A frame I would alter so that it goes under the main frame at the front about 400mm out from center and extends back to the side frame, this will give better structural strength to the frame, .Steel can be sourced from METALAND,.
AS WELL AS WELDING RODS , HINGES ETC.

For the floor , look at FORM PLY 17mm for strength, and durability, and a you could use the same for the sides. Sides can be made from 30x 30x3 angle iron with weld on hinges etc.

The axle can be sourced on e-bay and there is a seller in Melbourne who sell axle, springs, hubs , hangers ETC as a kit for trailers. With the boat trailer , even with transport this was over &150.00 cheaper than I could source in Brisbane.

I recommend you put side on , as this will make the trailer more versatile, and increase resale value later.

Couple of pic's of my build
    Cheers

    Jeff

cheers for that. i might even make an exact copy of yours. i have a ute so a box sided trailer isn't really needed, hoe ever i could always make them at a later date.

also how far apart are your supports?

also would i be better using blue or gal steel then gitting welds with zinc it or similar. as gal for some reason is cheaper 50x50x2.5mm is arround $50 a length or $70 for blue steel

MY cross bars are 1mt apart and the frame is 50x25x2mm , and the drawbar is 50x50x2.

If you can weld GAL fine go for it , I find Gal is a pain , and spits everywhere,
that's why i used Blue steel.

I then undercoated the trailer and painted it with marine Enamel,

well all the trailer i found locally to use as abase were 2 small or 2 ratty.
Just called into a local trailer builder to see if he had any old trailer (either for parts, trade ins or knew of some trailers) well ened up getting him to build me a 100% new trailer.

    750kg springs
8x4 base (to put a sheet of marine ply on)
1.5m draw bar for ease of towing and to minamise over hang
    led lights
15" ford rims new rims with 90%+ tyres
2 builders racks out of 40mm box that i can put 2nd yak on.
dual chains (requested this) just for extra safty
tie down point 15cm behind coupling so yaks can never slide off (will add other tie points to ply)
    painted in industrial gray

    $400-$500

    BARGIN OF THE YEAR!!!

i was hoping for a trailer (7x5min) base for $500

you got an absolute bargain, he must have been short on work, $500 would not cover his materials normally. He must have had parts and material on hand that he had gotten at bulk prices.
