Default My welding skills are ... inferior

    I am not a welder.
Against all odds I try to get a nice bead on thin material with an old stick welding machine.
    What could possibly go wrong?

Need to turn you amps down, plus your electrode angle is incorrect, that type of join is not the best to start out on, you just need more practice, find some scrap and get your basic technique right doing simple butt welds.

    Default Arc welding

    Hello Finno.
If your using an old transformer welder ( heavy ) that could be part of the problem. They are AC and low open circuit voltage. Modern electrodes are formulated for DC and high voltage. A good web site to visit is weld.com A Canadian welding school with video thru the lens.
Another tip is clean the metal and don't try to weld air gaps.

To get practice of laying down a nice bead, dont try to weld 2 pieces together.
Start by practicing on a thick piece of clean steel and get your beads looking right. play around with current and angles and speed until the weld looks ok then try joining metal together.
A butt joint is hard to do without blowing holes in it, start with lap joints .
