Thread: Weldcorp 160 MIG

I was given a Weldcorp 160 Gas/Gasless MIG made in Italy for use up at the museum I volunteer at.

I’ve googled for a manual but the only one I can find doesn’t match the welder I have even though it’s named the same.

The shield and spring are missing off the end of the gun but I’m not sure what type It requires.

Also the welder uses a small disposable canister for gas but doesn’t have the hose or regulator. I’m wondering if it can be converted to use a proper argon gas bottle?

Came without any wire.

The museum doesn’t get any funding and is run as a not for profit organisation. So I’m wondering if the welder is actually worth the expense before I start chasing bits.

My experience with small MIG welders like that is they are just a source of frustration. Horrible wire feed, very coarse selection of voltage and wire speed.

If the museum doesn’t have funding they probably aren’t going to be keen to hire a gas bottle - so you would probaa as blue want to run gasless wire in it.

Are there any other welders (machines - not the bodies to operate them) at the museum?

Best way forward if you do want to see if it’s useful would be to grab a small roll of gasless wire, and just give a run.
I don’t think you even need to fit a nozzle for gasless.

For a place like that, a little inverter stick welder would be the go I reckon. No ongoing gas rental etc - just a packet of rods.
You could likely get a couple of handfuls donated.

In terms of gas I was thinking I’d buy a small exchange bottle.

There is the most ancient stick welder up there already I think it creates an arc by striking to flints together.

Also there is one 240v 10amp PowerPoint and a
Rats nest of extension leads to wire the place up. So we couldn’t run a large welder.

I hope it's a vintage fire fighting museum- because that sounds like a liability.

For the torch, it's a binzel MB15 knockoff.
You are missing the gas nozzle and nozzle spring. you can get a front-end kit for them- with a small selection of bits to get it up and running. Part number BP002.0000 via google.

Correct, running gasless wire (self shielded) can be used with NO nozzle, BUT it does expose the contact tip to being inadvertently touched to the job- in which case you'll be looking to buy a whole new torch frontend, OR replacing the whole thing. Which will be costly, if not impossible.
