    Default Cigweld 185 Ultra

    Hey

I have a cigweld ultra 185 and when doing roughly 4m of weld, in that time the machine shuts off about 4 or 5 times and does a restart and I can't find or anybody to tell me what the problem is. I have taken it in from where i bought it but they can't get it to fault. It most of the times happens when I will stop and then go to start again and it does a quick arc then it will shut down. It has happened a couple of times while in the pool.
Mig welding using .9 wire on auto weld on 2mm. Hope someone has some ideas if its a setting that's been touched.?? Cheers

I have the CIG 185 standard similar but no automatic weld settings options , the duty cycle is 20% at 185amps , you won't get a 4m weld in one hit. i.e if you weld a 1m length of steel at 185 amps you will only get about 20cm and then have to wait until its ready to go again. It might help if you use no extension cord and run it off a 10amp circuit with nothing else running off it at the same time.

Thanks for reply, the four meters isn't in one hit sorry, it was just to show how many times it shuts down. Have to run a lead because of where the job is and nothing else on the circuit.

    Cheers

Maybe try a new extension cord , make sure you got a good earth use a G clamp to earth it . If you can get an electrician to check the circuit and maybe ask him to install a dedicated 15amp circuit from the board to the power point , i had one installed with no RCD to minimise tripping when welding , it did minimise cutting out. If its under warranty take it back and get the manufacturer warranty dept to check it out.

Really, you can only weld 200mm and then it stops? That must be annoying!!

Out of interest how long do you have to wait.

Normally the welder is waiting for me to start.

    Hi Scottymac,
    Welcome to the MetalWork Forums.
There is lots of metalwork facets here besides welding .

We have a excellent membership base of members compromising of many experienced, knowledgeable and supportive people.

You can look around to see what we can offer by doing this. Look for the rectangle box ( FORUM ) in the top LH corner and click on it.

A dropdown menu appears with Forum Home on the top line. click that and a whole page of our subforums and help screens appear.
There is plenty to see and participate in.

Please make sure to read the the TOU's ( Terms Of Service - our forum rules. There is even a sub forum to post in, for you to introduce yourself and tell about your metalworking interests you and the tools and equipment you have to pursue those interests.

We look forward to your participation in our forums.

    Welcome again.

Getting down to your Cigweld 185 problems .

I am afraid it may be a case of of not enough welder for the volume of weld. With a ten amp GPO you can't expect miracles.

If you know how you might care to take a multi meter reading of the out put voltage at the wall plug-GPO.

Though its its a nominal voltage ( here in OZ its 240V ) what is present at the GPO may well effect what is available at the business end.

I have taken voltage readings as low as 214 volts at home and it makes a difference.

Another point worth looking at could be the cooling. Trial it with a fan blowing into the case and see if that makes a difference. Also I agree with dispensing with the extension cable if using one. Perhaps something else to look at could be using .8mm wire. The current density on the smaller diameter wire is greater so there is more grunt.

I would trade the cost of the bells and whistles for more power if it was my choice.

    Thanks Grahame,

Have tried without the extension cord, only welding 2mm sheet to 3mm RHS so not using too much power.
Yep I think manual control is a better option than the LCD screen and all the technology

    Cheers
