The Arc Welding Penetration
Hi All,
I'm a new poster here, but my brother is into the wood side of things so i've seen a lot of your posts around for a few years, just decided to sign up the other day as i'm getting into the metal working side of things now
My question is about arc rod selection and the penetration depth of each. I have here some 6013 and 7014 rods and will be welding 50mm round tube (or is it pipe, I forget) with a 3mm wall. From what I read both rod types have a "medium" penetration. How far is this refering to and would these rods be sufficent later on for welding 25x25x3mm box tube for an offroad buggy I plan to build - that is after I make the workbench, shelves and possibly a trailer for collecting steel and timber

For those in the know, it's called 'O' Beam. Like I beam or H beam, but circular.
You fellas have a weird love for 6011's and 7018's. Us down here, not so much. But then again, your overhead weld is our 1F. So par for course.
Realistically, some rods are more aggressive than others. For non critical welds, the 6013 will be fine.
They will also be fine for your 3mm (~1/8") material.
For the buggy job, I'd be considering other options, maybe 7016 for the low hydrogen benefits of it.
Penno is a function of amps and travel speed mainly, with rod selection coming into it a little. If you are just starting out, you'll have more to worry about than the rods - lots of other welding variables will be a bigger concern when starting out.

G'day Reed
Welcome to the MetalWork Forums.
We have a good bunch of blokes here. You are not the first here, to ask about basic electrode welding and you won't be the last.
We have many great welders and there is always someone willing to help a new guy. You may have to watch out for some of us here as they are leg pullers
Tells us about your welding machine if you have one. What brand is it ? Is it a new inverter type or an old one?
For the 3mm wall stuff I would grab some 2.5mm electrodes in 6013.
To get a feel for what we have here go to:
Go to the FORUM box at top LH corner and click on it.
A drop down menu appears and you can select Forum Home at the top of the drop down menu list. Scan down the pages to look at what we have.
Please make an effort to read the Terms of Use -our Rules - pretty standard for many forums these days.By joining the forum its automatic that they apply to you as a member. Not having read the the TOUs won't be of help if someone does not follow them.
Sometimes the soft ware works so you can't post pics or links until 10 posts are made ( or such links and pics are cleared by a mod)
Its anti spam thing.
There are all sorts of forums that might be parallel with your interests, found as described above.
Welcome
