Default what is this coated with?

hi all. im new here, and new to mig welding. many years with a stick but wanna learn mig. something im trying to work out is what this is coated with. i have this piec of old try i want to practice with, but it has some kind of coating on it that i cant see.
ive tried hydrochloride acid, sulphuric acid, acetone, thinners, petrol, blowtorch. nothing removes it.
ive noticed that a few other pieces of scrap seem the same somehow. quite simply, i cant trike an arc on them.
what is this coating and how do i remove it?

It is probably anodised - oven cleaner or drain cleaner may get it off (with care)

Quite few things will remove anodising but unfortunately may also attack the Al underneath - caustic soda base drain cleaner for instance will do that.

There is a product called "Greased Lightning" which is commonly used to strip anodising off small parts but its MSDS says itsa 10% solution of caustic soda plus glycol ether and a surfactant. It claims not to affect the Al but it does say not to leave parts in for too long.

Anodizing can be dissolved without affecting the underlaying Al using a dilute solution of phosphoric and chromic acid. The latter is nasty stuff - best kept away from.

Is there a reason you can't remove it mechanically?

theres no reason i cant remove it mechanically, just time and work thats all.but for the sake of learning id also like to learn what it is, how do i tell, and other possible ways to remove it.
i will check out the phosphoric and chromic acid.

after playing around with it, i realized if i grind 1 piece, i can run from that as long as i dont try to flow too fast. i cant start an arc on a fresh clean piece, but as long as i weld from a previous weld im right. the way that it pools is slightly different, so a matter of playing with the settings.
