started life with hiderock then moved to sub $200 (Auto1 from memory) autodark about 15 years ago - it failed with 5 years of sweat dripping into the back of the unit
Then moved to another sub $100 one from ebay - failed pretty fast due to heat and sweat - I cobbled together a working unit using the last 2 helmets, some batteries, and lashings of hot glue....
Bought a $150 unit (can't recall where) and it still works, but the harness and tension is weak, with the helmet often falling down or moving mid weld. I'd already modified the harness (Old hiderock), and added a detachable cloth hood to prevent sunlight coming in from behind. This unit was the first with removable/ replaceable batteries, and it's now a stipulation in all units I look at.
Since the helmet above was starting to have glitches with the harness, I was eyeing off one of the Lincoln units with the large window, true colour, etc. When my wife went to buy it for me, she came home with an ESAB A50 sentinel.
The sentinel has been in use now for over 12 months, and I certainly can't complain about it - works well, and is very comfortable. The digital controls are easy to use (not that I touch them often), and the layers of lenses are great for protecting the element. The helmet is starting to "flop" a little, and I['m hoping it will be an easy fix.
The only thing with the sentinel is that the face is so "round" - I have to be really careful when I put the helmet down on a bench that it doesn't roll off.
