You are not suggesting my $2/kg retail price 6013 Permanent Brand chinese welding rods are to blame?

I hope I do not have to change welding rod brands.

I was leaning towards blaming the Unimig.

The minimum OCV specification for electrodes only comes into play when running AC current as it allows the arc to reignite after the 0 Volts portion of the AC cycle. A DC current will run an arc with a bare wire, in fact early arc welding electrodes were just that, bare wires and yes they did produce porosity.
Some VRD's are able to be turned off, while others are able to be set to a different level by internal switching and then some cannot be altered at all. To be honest, most VRD difficulties are caused by either poor earthing or even more commonly, simple lack of familiarity with VRD equipped welders. Keep persevering and it will get better.

Some testing of other rods yields the following results.

    6011's seem to strike fine.
    6013's are a bit crap.
    7014's seem fine.
7016's a bit stickier, but they are sticky at the best of times.
    8018's, see 7016.

I am certainly no expert on stick welding, and vertical up's, I have always found difficult. Having had to do some today, the unimig really seemed to have made the outcome better. I am not going to be doing any pipeline work anytime soon, but they are strong enough. They were WIA 16TC rods. 3.2mm at 75 amps. I do like this welder. I still do not like the VRD, but the welder works really well.

The project was my tipping trailer. The rocker roller hanger was never reinforced when built at the factory and I found it had ripped itself off. I think my fix should be strong enough.

Nice VU's, I don't like doing them either. Another alternative, would be to weld flat plates about 50-60mm long, either side of the hanger on the underside along the chassis rails. Just for interest sake, what was the thickness of the chassis rail, please.

It is 3mm thick 150mm X 50mm, with another 150mm X50mm on top of it for the tipping tray. I would have thought it should have been 4mm being a 3500KG trailer. My brother has an identical trailer from the same manufacturer, except his is a couple of years older. On his the middle hanger has been reinforced at the factory.

    Hi RC.
For someone who has difficulty with the vertical up position weld and probably doesn't do a whole lot lot of them, I am saying you have done good mate!

Thanks, I have been watching quite a few Welding Tips and Tricks videos. I have used a triangle technique.

That broken hangar looked like it was welded on 3 sides?

    Oh, and nice repair.
