    Default Transtig 250EC Problems

Hi Guys. I have an old Transtig 250EC ,which is not behaving well.
The operator manual mentions in "maintenance" to remove the top cover and adjust the
"spark gap" every six months or so . Can any one advise where this adjustment is located ?
To me everything looks to be solid state.
    Thanks,
    valley.

    Hi Valley

Welcome to the the Metalwork Forums.

Here is a guide to exploring our forum. Things including the rules Terms of Use may have changed and well worth keeping up with.

If you click on the down arrow in the FORUM box -Top LH corner

A pull down menu appears by clicking Forum Home.Forum Home and it takes you to a scroll -able page.

The Terms of Use -please read- them are right on top and the rest as you scroll down are help areas and sub forums . Some of the sub forums have stickies on top to guide the user.

We are privileged to have a group of helpful folk here.

    Transtig 250EC

From memory there were a few separate Transtig 250 EC models. The majority are -large Esky, stood on its end size with castors.
    - and the other were smaller (almost) portables. There were a bunch of variants.Google Transtig 250EC and select illustrations /pics to see what I mean.

Some of the metal cases had apertures covered by a screwed down cover plate a couple of inches square and others didn't. Those with no openings had solid state EC control and no user adjustable parts. Also consider that the manual may not be the right one for the machine you have.

aldwaker in 2011 asked a question in the forums about tracking down a board for a Transtig 250 EC.He received no reply other than Cigwelds phone number.

If you have no sheet metal covers on the external case you almost certainly have a solid state model,. If so best make friends with someone into circuit board repair.

please consider visiting the welcome wagon to introduce yourself and tells us about your metalworking. It is in the forum home scroll down page

Also you might change your location to a town or suburbs. It makes it easier for members close by to help if necessary.

I hope to offer you some valuable feedback.

The spark gap is accessible by removing the top cover.
Refer to the maintenance manual for the correct spark gap value.

Let's go back a step. When you say "not behaving well", what is it it doing/not doing. Spark gap only affects HF, so if your issue is not HF related, you will be barking up the wrong tree.

    Default Transtig 250EC

    Hi Grahame:
Thank you for your welcome and very valid advice:
The machine I have , " large Esky Type " is solid state
and appears to have no spark gap adjustment. The problem
with it is virtually no amperage control in either "local" mode
using the amperage dial or "remote" mode using the foot control.

So is it running 'flat out' or 'minimum setting', when you say it has no adjustment?

    Hi Valley,
Could possibly take a picture of the front of the Transtig EC case showing the controls.?

Also another maybe another showings specs label usually on the back panel.

It will help a lot with ID of controls so we are all pulling on the same oar.

    Any lights, or fan noise,then?

Disregarding the spark gap adjustment for the moment, I would ask if the pedal plug is disconnected when the local mode of operation is attempted.

Could it be that the remote has an over ride function to prevent local operation when the pedal is connected and possibly that pedal unit is faulty ?

It could point to a problem in the amperage control circuit. Something that could be solved by cleaning or reconnecting .

Since you have only given QLD as a location we can't recommend a close by commercial repairer who might be able to diagnose the problem further.

This is why we encourage a more precise area location such as a suburb or a locality.
