Uni-Mig Viper 200DC TIG/MMA Welder - KUMJRVT200P
Hi Everyone,
New to the forum here, and just about to get back into welding - was a Stainless Steel fabricator about a decade ago! So looking for advice on new machines.
I've found a Uni-Mig Viper 200DC TIG/MMA Welder - KUMJRVT200P on Gumtree for $650 - seems like a good deal to me? Wondering if anyone has any experience with this specific model? (And then with Unimig as a brand in general).
My other options are to pick up a Cig-weld or something of the like. I'm looking to get fully set up to weld S/S for around the $1000 mark. Not looking to go super high amps, it'll mostly be hobby/DIY stuff in the garage like building smokers/bbqs, welding sheet, tube and small bars. I do like the idea of having a bit of arc and gas control with the machine.
Any recommendations, experience and advice would be greatly appreciated.
Mark

Basic DC tig
Hello from BC.
If you arc looking for a home set up, the basic 140A welders with lift arc tig function are good. They come with a 10A plug and fair dutycycle. You have a good choice in that range. Unitig Razor 140, Weldarc 140. Weldskill 140. Even with a T17V torch and an argon reg you should pick up one for about $450.00 plus GST. The 3 year warranty is another factor. Beware of second tier units from internet sellers. Some have little in back up.
regards

Uni-Mig Viper 200DC TIG/MMA Welder - KUMJRVT200P
I have that machine. Bought it used on gumtree too but with issues. Fantastic machine (if it’s the same). HF start, pedal compatible (although that’s the bit I’m struggling to get working properly), gas solenoid, pulse.
Edit: mine is different. Has the 1 knob and buttons. But I’ve had 2 Unimigs and found them both excellent.

I have never owned a unimig. But a mate has, and was less then impressed. When he had an issue the 'tech support' on offer was to just gave him pages of the instruction manual, and tell him to read it.
The price... well depending on what features you expect, and what your expectations are of a used machine... add a few more shekels to the equation and you are playing in new machine territory.
Quite a few little MMA power sources have LIFT-TIG functionality, and what you save to the $650 price can go towards filler, gas and a nice brand name torch that will be a pleasure to use (CK Worldwide or bust).
Obviously open the wallet more if you want the full pulse capability, up and down slope control, foot pedal, or even AC etc.
One project I'm working on ATM is getting an old TIG pedal working with an old Kempii minarc 150. Because why not?
Also, great choice of project. I recently built my second smoker, and there are more on the cards. Built a stickburner offset out of a 400L hot water system tank, made a smaller one out of a car LPG tank, and for an easy project some day, will have a crack at a UDS.

Never owned a Unimig, so just my opinion, I checked out the range of these machines when looking for a new AC/DC machine recently. They look the business on the outside, but ......
Most if not all have abysmal duty cycles, now I know hobby welding doesn't require hours of continuous use but for me, if a machine only has a 20% duty cycle then it's going to get hot a lot quicker than a machine with say a 60% D/cycle.
Check out Token tools gear (no affiliation just a happy customer) I bought their digital 215A Metalmaster and it's a suberb machine for the money. Yes it's chinese but then again Unimig are too.
I had a minor operational issue with mine, I lost HF start, rang Pete and he went straight into diagnostic mode with me and problem was sorted easily, I had been using too low a start current and the hf contacts had become dirty, he even explained how to check it out without removing the cover.
With these cheaper machines customer service and follow up is everything and it's very comforting to know help is only a phone call away.
