Tig Welding gas (Argon)
Hi Guys,
I know this topic has been done to death however looking in the search function I am finding it hard to find the info I'm looking for exactly.
I know there will be other guys looking for the info as well in a similar situation.
Atm I have the size D gas bottle from Bunnings. $200 for bottle and $99 for gas. I would like to get a more cost effective size bottle, I'm thinking Size E.
I don't want to rent because I am a hobbyist and could take along time to use the gas potentially.
I am in Sydney and would like to find outlets( Sydney tools, total tools?) I can buy the bottle and return when empty similar to Bunnings and swap out for a nominal fee
If I give he bottle back I get back the original purchase price of the bottle minus the gas.
Thanks in Advance.
Max

I get mine from Total Tools. Started off on E and when I ran that dry too quickly I paid the difference at refill time and took away a G instead. No rental, and it’s pretty cheap per little in the larger size.
I really liked that I could start off on a smaller size and not really be penalised if I had to go larger. Wasn’t sure how much I would go through.

I had thought (could be wrong) that Bunnings also did E size. I prefer Bunnings myself for gas as they are open 7 days and I always seem to run out of gas on a Sunday...

Did exactly the same thing for both my MIG and TIG gas. Total Tools changed their suppliers between my original E size and G sizes but there was no problem returning the original cylinders. Total Tools is also open 7 days in SA, but not for the hours that the big green store is. Bunnings do an E size but not a G.

BOC D E or G size plans. D size is $108. E is $199 (this is what I'm on- get an included refill each year with no deposit- and there are plenty of gas agents around in the areas I work)
Bunnings trade gas in D (what you're on- this is Coregas)
Air Liquide do the AlBee offer. D's only if I remember correctly. Deposit offer. Cant remember prices when i enquired.
Don't think supergas do anything like that.
Speed Gas via Total Tools / Sydney tools- same , different stink.
Power 10.
PureGas.
Ebay peddlers ("chuck it in a box and post it back to us- she'll be right maaaaate")
Then there is the disposables if you want to pay the equivalent of 11ty billion per cubic meter of product...
IMO Deposit is just rent disguised as ownership- usually 1-3 years the annual rental cost. In the end of the day, if you have a speedgas bottle, only speedgas will fill it or take it off you. When you read the fine print, you never actually 'own' a cylinder, you just buy into their scheme (basically buy a share in their cylinder fleet and become a liability on their balance sheet). It's like the miners of old days- get paid in scrips and only being able to spend them at the mine store

Thanks guys, awesome information. Another reason I really like this forum. I will look into my "local" tool shop for gas

I swapped my Bunnings D argon for an E, easy as pie, only drawback it the E's are $300.00 deposit so had to pay an extra $100.00 on top of the fill. Beauty is I can swap between types or return full stop and get my full deposit back at any time. I'm a low level user and an E cyiliner will last me between 12 to 18 months so the slightly higher fill price doesn't matter to me. Not a lot of things I like about the green shed but their Coregas deal is definitely one of them.
Cheers,
Greg.

D size is $108. E is $199, this is still the rental per year isn`t it with one refill per year.
I used CIG then BOC for nearly 30 years. There were times I paid and did not use gas for years but I liked the idea of having it there if I needed it.
With all the companies offering gas I tried to get a better deal BOC. No go so 18 months ago I took all my bottles back. Suddenly they offered me all sorts of discounts and deals because I was a valued customer. To little to late.

Yeah, the D plan is a yearly fee, but on the other hand I'm getting something for my coin unlike the traditional rental thing. Plus I don't want to have my $300 held ransom forever. I've got better things to do with that money, and I actually use my cylinder each year, unlike some who buy them to collect dust...

I see now on the bunnings web site that they do E size bottle which is good. I am sure a couple years ago or less it was just D size. Of course I am assuming and hoping that the E size is available at the same store that I go to for the D size as not all stores do the Gas bottles .I notice the refill price is $159 the same as Total tools. $475 for new bottle and gas with Total tools for E size

Bunnings don't need a copy of the receipt for refill swap.
Swapping from from D to E was done as a return of the D, refund of $200 deposit and new E with a new $300 deposit + $150ish for the fill.
Using scan of original receipt on phone was no problem, they just need to be able to read the numbers.

Just an FYI for everyone, Not all Bunnings stores that carry Coregas sell D and E size bottles. My not so local store Balgowlah 2093 which have D don't stock E size. I have phoned head office this morning to find a store that sells E size bottles. Seems like Castle hill 2154 is my nearest store that stock E size at least according to the website?
P.s I have confirmed they are in stock at Castle Hill
