Any welder worth its salt in a specialised production environment welding to code will have the ability to lock out or at least limit parameters available to the operator.
Some are even going to LAN based data logging to assist welding supervisors with ensuring that metrics are being met within these available parameters.
The days of 2-dial Timmy who only uses 1 setting for whatever he is welding and won't be told otherwise, are numbered.

The newer technology certainly goes some way to mitigating the effects of operators that cannot or will not adhere to a procedure sheet. Unfortunately we do not yet have the technology to adjust attitudes, so these same souls will find other areas to spread their superior knowledge and derail the job.
And they wonder why robots seem such an attractive option?

Unfortunately we do not yet have the technology to adjust attitudes,
We've a 220 amp CIG three in one welder at work, and I'm befuddled when it comes to setting it up. I know I'm old but this new technology is getting beyond me.
I remember welding Cyanide pots, 1" thick material, 6" fillets, it was a Ranby welder that I was using, with rods as thick as my thumb, and the choke sat about a metre and a half away from it. It ran for several days like that. Them was the days.
KrynTo grow old is mandatory, growing up is optional.
