Old old transtig 180 surge filter
Hi all. I have an early 90s CIGWELD transtig 180 that has broken down. After finishing an ally weld while the welder was cooling it popped the CB. Investigation found what I think is a surge filter had overheated and burst probably shorting out causing the CB to trip. It is attached directly to the active, neutral and earth at the mains input point. The welder fires up without it in the circuit but I am not game to try welding without it just in case I damage the welder. I can't identify this filter nor find any info on the web. Local electrical stores look at me blankly. It almost looks like a clear plastic fluorescent light starter and about the same size. It is wired red, black and earth to two flat capacitors then to the corresponding colour input wires in parallel. Can anyone identify it. A name and specs would be good as it is so old I may have to put an alternative in. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

The "capacitors" on the back look like MOVs for surge suppression (if the voltage exceeds a threshold, say 400V, they become conductive and shunt the current to earth). The three-leaded cylinder most likely has a similar role, perhaps filtering high frequency noise, as suggested.

Thanks guys. Anyone have any idea on what the outcome might be if I was to use the welder without this in the circuit. I have a transmig 195 as well both bought new around 1990 but it doesn't have the same setup so leaning towards something to do with the HF.
