Just made a call to my local welding supplies store, i explained what the machine is doing and i was told it would be the earth lead so i took a look and under the lug its all rusted, bolt, washers, lug is very dirty I'm going to clean it up and see how i go
the guy at the shop said its a very old machine he said i can drop it in and have them check it and give me a quote on the repair bill, i am in it $350 not sure i want to spend much more on it

I think the best you can do is to clean the contact surfaces like you were going to and give it a bit of a clean out. While you're inside the machine, look for anything obvious like cables or terminals that look to have been running hot, check for loose wires or plugs and also have a bit of a look at the boards to see if there are any components that appear to have got hot.
If that fails, then I could see the repair bill rapidly outpacing the value of the machine.

I had the machine outside today Karl i couldn't work it out it would not switch to AC was stuck on DC than i attache the torch to the foot peddle plug on the machine than it switched over to AC than i switched the plug back over to torch button and all the settings were back to normal again
i tried to run a bead the machine arc'ed and HF worked with my Unimig earth lead it got to almost creating a puddle than the arc would go out i would let off the button than back on again and it would arc again and kept doing so
i have listed the machine on Gumtree and Ebay at a loss i thought it were going to be a very easy repair my local welding shop says its a earth problem and they are happy to look at the machine and give me a quote i think this is free but not 100 percent sure
these are the machines im looking at now
AIG Tig a little worried about outlaying the whole $499 now and waiting five to six weeks for delivery
other options are both 185amp micro tig machines one only has 3 dials and cost $750 the other has more dials and is semi digital, i really like the simplicity of the basic 185amp tig its almost like the very first everlast 185 tig welder but both of these machines come with Chinese warranty

I sold that machine also selling my Mech Professional AC/DC Tig tomorrow, i have not decided on a new machine yet either TIG or MIG sitting on the fence as to which way to go
do u think a Razoweld 175 mig would have good penetration on five to six mm aluminium with or without preheat?
thinking about those tig machines direct from China on alibaba worried about the warranty or getting parts for the machine

Doesn't it get more confusing just changing machines all the time?

Mick i'm always on a second hand budget and all that pops up when i have the cash are advanced machines which i buy than think how do i use it so i end up on here asking for settings advice
I decided to keep my Mech Professional tig i know most of the setting just the machine is very old and not very portable
The AIG tigs are still 5 weeks away i cant wait that long

I think I have probably posted this before, but you must have torn up a lot of $$$ in your time buying and selling machines. I cannot help but think that perhaps Afterpay or Zipmoney may be an option for you to get into a decent machine once and for all. Not getting results must be frustrating for you and constantly changing machines eats dollars up.
To be honest, the only real bargains that come up second hand are three phase industrial machines, most of the single phase stuff is being sold cheap for a reason.

That is true Karl because i suck at saving i can't get enough money together to buy a decent machine that is new and outright, a new AC/DC Tig start at $1300 thats a lot of money for me but i never even thought about afterpay i have have never used it before but it could work out rather well for me
i had a bit of coin and was tossing up on the next machine so i bought a Unimig mig 200 razor weld i think that's a improvement over the machines i have had in the past this machine should be a keep i now just need a quality tig machine, the Unimig was a insurance replacement brand new still in the box i bought for six fifty
donno what i was thinking of getting another machine directly from China i guess its the only thing "new" that i could afford but now thinking about using afterpay that would make it much easier to afford
