    Default Mr Safety Toes

I will often bemoan how unsafe people can be in using an angle grinder. I was surfing through u tubes the other day and found a guy who deserves a special mention.

Not the standard grind with out a guard safety type hazard. nah! that's a standard for the punters. This one is a special effort, sort of, over and above.

I will let the pic do the talking. Sorry its a carp pic but it is a screen shot. Clue !check for the hold own toes at the right.

Do you have any outstanding Angle Grinder" "hall of fame" candidates that you could add to this thread?

I should have qualified it just to "angle grinder /s" as that,s been an interesting recent topic.
    I'll change that now.

Unsafe is in the eye of the beholder.

For example how unsafe is driving when all you have to do for instant death of at least one person and most likely multiple people is turn the steering wheel about thirty degrees. Can anyone name something more dangerous in the workplace then that?

tend to agree. A lot of the safety stuff nowadays is purely insurance driven. A bit more education at schools would negate a lot of this. Not necessarily unsafe if you have a full understanding of the risks involved.
My 17 year old boys are not allowed to use the guillotines at school in case they cut off an arm. How does that prepare them for the real world? If you don't have an appreciation for risk and consequence then its can be very dangerous. Knowing the risk makes it a lot safer.

Nothing to do with tools; but. how many parents consider it unsafe to allow their children to walk to school. Whatever happened to teaching kids safety issues. When a kid I walked or rode a bike and knew better than to talk to or get into a stranger's car. I was taught to look right, then left then right again before I crossed the road. Now days cars have to slow to 25kph and have someone with a lollypop stop the traffic for them so they can cross the road - I wonder what this is teaching them.

Whilst it's true the world was a safer place half a century ago, do we really need to absolve kids of all responsibility, some of life's lessons are learned the hard way.

I shudder to think what sort of safety procedures are implemented in shop classes now - full fire retardant suits to use a soldering iron?

Actually I really do doubt it was. for example children today are far safer from violent crime and all forms of abuse and injury then at any time in the past.

One of my pet hates is angle grinders fitted with TCT milling cutters, you know the type that do a brilliant job of removing Aluminium and an even better job of removing flesh and bone.
As far as I am concerned, they are illegal as the relevant Australian Standards stipulate that circular saws shall be fitted with a retracting guard that automatically covers the blade when not in use. A grinder with a steel blade has to be considered a saw as far as I can see.
Worse still, hardware stores and budget hardware retailers seem to love them.

As a co incidence, today I was reading a NT government safety alert on the same topic, Karl.

An angle grinder jury rigged like this just screams dangerous but still we we have those that have this get it done mentality and to heel with safety its for sissies..

Here is what i found today.

    http://www.worksafe.nt.gov.au/PDF%20...e-grinders.pdf

I reckon these guys noticed the old blade wood carver tool that was Specifically ENGINEERED for an angle grinder. It needed a 2 hand grip. They decided to take it take it a step further.

Note the grinder in the Alert pic which is sans a handle. Its not hard to imagine the grinder slipping out of a one handed grip with horrible results.

It does not say much for the girl that she has to resort to that to showcase what in particular?
Was it skill?, craft? dexterity? or just about what lengths of innate stupidity some one will flaunt themselves to persuade the crowd to acknowledge them ?

    You've got that right Grahame.
I have actually seen one of these performances live - not by choice I must add. I was left with the overriding thought of WHY??? I have never found angle grinders and being showered in sparks as sexy or entertaining. Perhaps I am doing something wrong?
