whats a good welder? welding 10mm / 12mm steel mig gas or gasless wood fire heater
hi
i am in the process of making a wood heater (shed), i have some previous experience in mig welding so i thought of buying a cheep welder to tackel the job.
any suggestions on a decent welder to do 10mm /12mm? around the $500 mark?
any help would be greatly appreciated.
i saw on ebay there is a 250A (15%duty cycle @240A) for $450 with free shipping ( inverter / 1 year warranty) only thing is it need 32 A , 240V power supply
is it possibly;e to get a 32A plug to a single phase residential property or dose it need 3 phase?

Hi , I've got a 210amp 3 in 1 inverter welder from Token tools and it comes with a 5 year warranty. Have a look at their web site. Give them a call and see what they have to suit your needs.

Yes you should be able to install a 32 amp single phase outlet in a domestic installation so long as you have appropriate sized mains to your switchboard. You will need to have an Electrician check and advise and you will need to budget $300 upward, unless you have a good sparky mate to help you out.
You are probably better going a little smaller outlet say 20 amp with a 25 amp circuit breaker, still costing a few $$$ depending on your installation etc and just weld with lower power and multi pass for your heavier sections being a common way to do it anyway.

You definitely will not need a 32A outlet. A 240A mig will run from a 15A supply quite happily.
Secondly 15%@240A is pretty sad, what that equates to is 45 seconds welding and 4 1/4 minutes cooling based on a 5 minute cycle which many are. That welder would probably be okay at lower amperage so all I am really saying is don't expect to be welding at 240A with that welder. Secondly $500 for a new 240A welder is bottom of the barrel pricing and I would expect its quality to be way down there.
For a 10mm fillet, you will be using 3 passes anyway so 180A will easily suffice. I have yet to see solid wire put a quality 10mm fillet in in one pass no matter how many amps you run. Don't even give gasless a second thought if you plan on doing much over 5mm. I would run a stick welder in preference to gasless.
One word of caution to anyone building a wood heater. There are insurance and rugulatory implications from building your own, so be careful. I know how well many home brewed wood heaters work, but times have changed.
