Advice needed
Gents
I'm currently rebuilding an old trailer, and one of the enhancements is a stock crate/cage.
I've built two ladder racks from 40mm SHS, which are designed to fit into some existing "sockets" one on each corner of the trailer box.
These sockets were made by welding 2 pieces of angle together, the problem being that the inside dimension is just less than 40mm, and the ladder racks won't fit into them.
I have run a thin-kerf friction blade down the side of one of the angles to split the socket and allow the SHS to fit.
Now of course, I have a slot in the Angle that will undoubtedly rust if left untreated.
What is the best way to fill this slot? I assume a thin piece of mild steel welded into it, or can I just run a nice wide bead along it? The slot is approximately 3mm wide.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Regards
Scott

hi scanfor,i would think a plate over the top your cut would give you the most ideal repair, something around 30 x6 flat and heavily stitched.whats your welding skills like?

My skills with MIG are OK, but they are "emerging" with my new DC stick.
Plating would be an ideal solution, thanks.

I'd remove the angle completely and weld in some RHS sections to suit your racks. Otherwise you'll fill a 3mm gap no worries with mig.
