Hi all,

Looking for some plans for a motorbike trailer, after something that would suit 3 bikes.

Especially interested if anyone has seen plans for a trailer in aluminium. Been looking at some of the local boat trailers made in aluminium and think it may be a nice lightweight option.

Cheers Silas

Not so much in the way of plans, but the basic idea is to start with a 6 x 4 chassis, add some channels, some custom touches and away you go.

In a little more detail, start with a couple of lengths of 40mm sq RHS, cut the following lengths;
2 x 1830mm (side chassis rails)
1 x 1675mm (front cross rail)
3 x 1140mm (centre cross rails)

then I use a piece of 75 x 50mm RHS for the Rear cross rail. Lay it all out square, tack, check measurement, and weld.
Two more lengths of 75 x 50 for the drawbar, and there's your basic frame.

Or I could build you one...

Actually, are you looking to build a standard M/bike trailer or a fully enclosed?

Here are the links for a trailer that I have made for a couple of people around here.

Hope this is helpful

Thanks for the replies guys. Has given me a few pointers and a place to start. Definitely looking at an ordinary open trailer rather than fully enclosed.

Still like the idea of doing it in aluminium but may revert back to steel.

To Yonnee,

What thickness steel would you recommend for the rails in steel?

Thanks in advance, Alf.

Because a box trailer gains quite a bit of strength from having sides, you can go a minimum of 2.0mm wall thickness. If you're doing a heavy duty trailer, then 2.5 or 3.0mm would be the go. And then if you we're going a flatbed type trailer, where all the strength is in the chassis, then minimum 3.0mm, even considering 75 x 50mm for the main side rails.

All this depends on what weight you want it to carry. So in this application, where bikes don't weigh a great deal, I would be using 40 x 40 x 2.5mm SHS.
(Just to clarify, SHS is Square Hollow Section, and RHS is Rectangular Hollow Section. But most just use RHS as the generic term for blue prime coated square/rectangular tube steel.)

Hope this helps.
