My model A Hercus has a motor with 4 wires coming out of it. 2 to run and 2 for the start coil I supose. How do I (or can I) wire this so it can run in reverse?

usually the start winding leads are reversed you will have to see which ones they are if its a centrifical switch its the 2 wires that go to the spring contacts

Thanks very much if have had it to bits a couple of times because the contacts in the switch were dirty I think but it was years ago. My physics is even longer ago.

not all motor are reversible, they have be wound with a reverse field, which gives you the reverse leads. just my .02 worth

if its a three phase motor , one for each phase and an earth

To reverse a 3PH motor you only need to put in a switch that reverses any two of the three wires.

No it's only a single phase motor with 4 wires one of either set go to active other to neutral. If I swap the switch wires around and it's not a reversable motor could it do harm?
