Hello All,

I was wondering how to remove the spindle from the headstock. I tried searching the forum but could not find any comments.

So what is the 'step-by-step' procedure?

What is the brand of the lathe. I know how to for several brands and they are different.

Buncha,

More info is required, eg, is it a Hercus? If yes, is it the plain bearing type, or taper roller bearings?

I'm sure you will get all the info you need following your response.

hi Buncha, if this is the real old girl of yours
here it Goes

1. Remove Chuck and .Loosen belt
2.remove grub screw on flat pulleys
3. undo screw on lock nut at end of Mainshaft and unscrew round lock nut
4.Not necessary but remove tumbler gear assembly
5.Undo 2 bolts on top of headstock
6.The fun bit either a Dead Blow Hammer or a piece of solid wood and belt the end of the shaft As I have done this several times the Mainshaft is a snug fit that is why I recomend you remove the tumbler assy just in case you miss with hammer and damage tumblers

My 1954 with a sledgehammer and a piece of 200 x 50 MM and 2 people never budged
I went and bought a Dead blow hammer and some WD-40
1 day later and 30 minutes later sucess

Once the mainshaft is removed in the casting is 2 square holes in which you should find a spring which has felt inside it this is to keep the bottom of the Mainshaft lubricated

when you remove the top bolts in the slit of the Headstock there will be some shims do not mix them up

Check you thrust bearing after cleaning if after cleaning and you have the 3 parts assembled together turn by hand if they grate or feel rough you will need to replace the thrust washer
having now pulled both lathes apart the 1941Flat Belt and the 1954 V-belt are the same method

Both Lathes were a cow to get the mainshaft out but plenty of WD-40 and leave overnight
then a Dead blow Hammer which is a very hard solid rubber mallet has the hitting power of a Ballpean Hammer but no damage

Got it out :U

Now to replace the back gear and fix a tooth on the spindle gears. I've also got an endless belt to replace the old flat belt. It is a car timing belt of the same length and width.

Hi Buncha,can you tell the size of the belt or what car it is off as my Mates lathe we just cut and shortened one but cannot keep the belt tight as it pulls the clips out of the belt ??

Also watch out underneath were the mainshaft fits is 2 pieces of felt pushed insinde a spring so oil is soaked up by the felt to keep the shaft lubricated

As I have just got mine running I have ?? a scratching noise which might be the spring that holds the felt so take care when replacing and make sure you mark were the keyway is on the Mainshaft and the Bullgear as it makes it easier to locate

The belt has the following marked on it;
6PK0890 350K6 432
No manufacturers ID but 'Made in USA'

I got it from Repco. It is just a little bit shorter than the old fabric belt and the same width. I have fitted it onto the drive pulley and it looks like it will be just right.

There were no felt blocks or springs under my spindle, just grease. There were no felts in the top lube fittings either, just swarf, which has scored the shaft.
