Hey Guys,

anyone know where I can get AS4177 certified trailer safety chain near Newcastle and is there a rule of thumb for the length of chain needed (just so I know how much to buy)

Cheers

I did a google on the as number and found that a trailer of up to 2500kg atm needs not less than 9.5mm dia link It didn't state that it had to be high tensile. I normally just use ordinary black chain about 450 to 500 long.

hope this helps

Hi Pulse,

Don't know much about suppliers around your area, but if you search yellowpages for a supplier of lifting equipment (chain blocks etc etc) they should be able to source some chain for you.

I work in manufacturing and we have used these fellows for lifting equipment (no association).

Thanks Guys,

I got a copy of AS 4177 (2004 revision) which specifies the chain for trailers. It says the chain has to be stamped with AS 4177 and a two digit code which specifies the ATM eg 4177-10 for 1000kg trailers.

Most state trailer rego info now quotes this standard.. presumably since 2004. I found a NSW one a while ago that said "since AS4177 is now widely available, this part of the trailer VSB will now be enforced"

That said I think it depends on the bloke who does the blue slip and whether he has read anything since 2004...

Seems bloody hard to find to me... might ring the blue slip guy tomorrow..

Pulse,
I can't help you with where to find a supplier local to you, but you should be able to get it from any local trailer manufacturer or trailer parts supplier. If not, a place that supplies lifting equipment.

Get a metre, should be heaps. Better to have a little long than a little short.

Don't buy non-rated chain! Even if you get your blue slip without the rego guy noticing, as the manufacturer, you are responsible for the trailer, for the life of the trailer. If, in 10 years, you sell the trailer, and the next bloke loads it up, it comes off his towball, snaps the non-rated chain, and spears an oncoming car, the accident investigation unit will go looking for the manufacturer. If it's done right, it's not an issue. Especially for around $15 p/m for the correct stuff.

OK, with the click of a mouse... get in touch with these guys and find a stockist nearest you. They have a branch in Sydney.

And the link to their site and the page mentioning the chain...

Hi Pulse,

I've been putting together some bits and pieces to build a box trailer. It will be approx 1220 x 2100 mm, unbraked ATM 750 kg.

The threads posted here have been so helpful, and Yonnee deserves special mention.

I bought some chain today, and received a generous metre for around $10 I think (I bought some other stuff too, not sure about the breakdown). It has stamped on it 4177-16-PWB (1600 kg rating I assume).

I bought it at Bearfast, Barnes St Taminda (industrial area of Tamworth), so not too far away for Pulse from the Base Hospital :D

Richard

Cheers Richard...

I know Bearfast.. and worked at TBH for about three years!

I ordered some chain from Bullivants which should arrive in a few days..

Before that I went to a large local trailer manufacturer, they told me they had stamped chain, got there and the bloke cut me a length of unstamped stuff!! The local vehicle inspector also had no idea! told me it didn't need to be stamped!

I now have a copy of AS 4177.. the main difference is that the chain needs to be tested. Out of each 200m a small length is tested and not allowed to elongate by more than 20%. The chain is also stamped with a capacity and the manufacturer at least every 4 links.

Amazes me how poorly complied with a 2004 standard is.

Anyway, waiting for my chain now from Bullivants...or until I can get to Tamworth again.

Cheers
