From what I have been able to deduce with the help of some friends from McPhearsons catalogs this is a 1930's Power Hammer, the design is very similar to the Little giant power hammers made in USA circa 1903.

The logs in the first photo will be getting dressed and turned into a plinth to raise the height of the hammer 180mm it's just to low and to work bent over is literally a pain. The foot control wil have an extension added.

The hammer came with this awesome old motor unfortunately the museum doesn't have 3ph power so an equivalent spec 240V motor is being sought. (4pole 1420RPM 3HP) The new motor will most likely be fitted up into the roof rafters so not to detract from the period look of the museum blacksmith shop.

Hopefully the power hammer doesn't need any work and can be put into use as soon as a new motor can be found.

Looks great.
To me it would be better to put a VFD in the rafters and keep the old motor.

One of the Ecogoo 240-380v 2.2kw units would be perfect.

I’m not sure if the motor is suitable for a VFD or even if it can switch between star & delta. If it can then yes that would be an option.

No need for delta conversion, as those Ecogoo VFDs step up the voltage. Others here have used Inflixin brand also. They look identical.
I’d be very surprised if the motor didn’t run happily on one.

$210 delivered from AliExpress for the Ecogoo

If you get one and it doesn’t work I’ll happily take it off your hands for the same price.

Well I'm jealous, how does the engagement mechanism work, is it a cone clutch on the flywheel?

Although it would be really nice to be able to change the frequency/speed using a VFD if you are only going to run it on 50Hz it should be OK. When connected to VFDs some old motors make odd (sometimes even irritating) noises but usually that is on higher (>60 Hz) frequencies. Some old motors just won't run efficiently at higher frequencies anyway and their bearings may not be up to it anyway.

Chances are that if the motor is would as star it can be modded to run in delta and then you can use a budget level 240V VFD.
If it is already a delta then Id go the ECOGOO route as suggested by Oxxandbert.
