Happened to come across this on youtube last night: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAftLQ4Ak4w

Apart from it being very nicely built, its a concept I hadn't come across before and gives some CNC capability to lathe without doing a full conversion. Obviously less rigid than the standard toolpost so would be limited in material removal rates, but gives the ability to do some of those turning tasks that are either painful or impractical to do on a manual lathe.

There's quite a few such videos once you go looking it is a way of getting some cnc capability out of a manual lathe only good for small stuff but just the thing for model engines where you need to make 12 or 16 inlet/exhaust valves, I don't know what others have experienced but for me making one of something is ok - make another 5 or 6 more and it's starting to get a bit tedious and you're not even half way there.

I really like the way he kept the compound fully, manually, functional.

Neither of my lathes have big enough compound slides to try that, but it is a good working design for a toolpost clamped CNC depth cutting machine.

Wow, that is great! I haven't seen that before but it makes a lot of sense, as long as you have some decent compound travel.
Yes, one offs are a pleasure, 2 or three and you spend a little time thinking what can i do to improve work flow, 5 or 6 and you start thinking Why am i putting myself through this.

Another concept I hadn't seen before:

It's an additional bed (slant or vertical) that is bolted onto the back of an existing manual lathe, to add CNC operations. What I like is that it clears the existing carriage, so you can do manual steps in between the CNC ones!

Pretty cool Steve, it's my first time seeing one too

A very clever adaption indeed.
If it included a spindle position reference this would be very nice for thread cutting.
