Hi Guys,

Just a reminder that if you need a cheap profile cutter, a woodworking router cutter works well, particularly in softer materials like aluminium and brass.

These cutters all have 1/4" shanks.

I remembered I had an unused box of cheap 1/2" shanked bits so I thought I would see how the 1/4'' radius coving bit would fare if used on some 1214. Fared well.

Good one Bob, I've though about using the round over bits on ally but didn't think of steel.

Hi Bob,

That's cheating :U you've got a collet attachment to hold yours :D I had to make a holder by drilling a bit of 12 mm square bar and sawing a slit down its length.

Seriously though it looks very good. I've done all sorts of shapes with my router bits on both the lathe and the mill.

As per my photos Brendan. 1214 is free cutting bright mild steel. I don't know how they would cope with something tough like 4140, probably go bang and there would be tears.:U

Hi Guys,

One of the issues with machining steel in particular with these router bits, is unless you have a way to adjust the tool bit hight, so that the tool is slightly below centre and you can rotate it so that the cutting edge has a slight rake, it will scrape material off the work rather than cut it. Zero rake is no problem for brasses and alloys.

Still its a cheap solution for the odd job. :U
