View Full Version : Quality of cheap titanium/tungsten wedding bands?

I'm looking to save money and am thinking of purchasing either a Titanium or Tungsten wedding band online. These two rings are exactly what I want but at a fraction of the cost of what I found at the local jewelry store. Should I be concerned about the quality of these affordable rings? Are there any specific questions I should ask the seller to verify the quality of the ring?
I am looking for a durable ring that will last a lifetime. The ring will spend most of its time on a necklace around my neck. Occasionally I will wear the ring on my finger.
Titanium: $24 USD https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32259597574.html
Tungsten: $12 USD https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32826888806.html

Hi icu222much
Welcome to the MetalWorkForums

I have approved the post to allow the links to be seen. Normally new members cant post links until they have 10 posts. Nothing personal, it is just part of the anti spam stuff built in to the Programme.

So that you can make yourself at home a bit easier in our forums here's a guide to navigating your way around.

Go to the the FORUM box in the top LH portion of the screen and click the down arrow beside it.
Select the top line Forum Home and click that.

It will take you to a scroll down page where you can find the sub forums, Terms of Use ( the rules of the Forum) guides to operating within the forum and all things relative to metalworking as well as the individual forums themselves.

Be aware we are mainly Aussies and some here have a larrakin sense of humor:D. Perhaps you might like to visit the Welcome Waggon and introduce yourself and tell us about your specific metalwork interests and what you might be working on at present?

There a plenty of people here in our forums who can offer help in the form of experience and knowledge.

icu222much welcome to the forum, two things to be aware of Buying from Alibaba is pretty much pot luck, you may not get what yo think you are getting, and at that price the warranty may not be
worth chasing, plus I have never seen a piece of jewellery that will last a life time in constant use (especially worn on a chain around the neck) without some ongoing mainteance
You would probably be surprised at the amount of wear human skin can supply even without the chain

I've bought a lot of electronics off Alibaba and they pretty much came as advertised. This will be my first time purchasing jewelry.

What do you mean by "you may not get what yo think you are getting"? Do you mean that they may advertise it as Tungsten, but it could be another material?

I have never worn any jewelry before for an extended period of time. What sort of wear can be caused on the chain by wearing it consistently wearing around the neck.

Hi icu222much
My late father was a watchmaker and jeweler. One job he did very often for customers was to resize rings and among them wedding rigs.

I know you said the ring will be around your neck on a chain, most of the time, but:

Folks get bigger as they get older and it will mean that you will not be able to get a tungsten or titanium ring resized as the metals cannot be be soldered should you want to wear it on your finger in the future.
A thought that occurred to me is is that those metals are hard and a chain is (relatively) soft so you might stand a chance off unexpectedly losing the ring due to wear on the chain.

Here is where this information came from:

https://www.callagold.com/wedding-rings-and-bands/dont-buy-titanium-or-tungsten-wedding-bands/

Its not my intention to persuade you one way or the other but it is handy to have all the facts.

What Graham said, that article explains it well, yes, I have purchased from Alibaba also ( not jewellery ) and have been satisfied, then I have also been been unsatisfied many times,
chasing up returns etc. can just be a big waste of time, they can basically sell you anything, there no reliable method in place to hold them to account.
