Hi,

I think the start up capacitor on my lathe has died.

I want to replace it but not sure where to get one from. I've looked at ebay and came up with this:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Appliance-Motor-Start-Run-Capacitor-Wire-Lead-CD60-AC-250V-50-60Hz-200MFD-G52A/272321181127

Local seller and its seems to match what I have. I've tried electrical retailers online but I'm struggling to find anything else.

Any suggestions?

Thanks Ben.377131

Actrol?

The main thing to match is the "Capacitance" in microFarads (MF) it should not be more than ~20% higher or lower that the original
Voltage wise , equal to or higher is OK.
Likewise with the max temperature rating (more is OK but not less).

Hi Ben,

If you are not in a hurry, this looks OK. Wire end rather than amp tags but just use a chocolate block to join the wires.

as BobL says make sure you get one at least close to 120mfd...200 is way too big

as Niel says...Actrol, Heatcraft or Airfrige would most likely have one, but ebay should be cheaper

Hi,

I bought the ebay one in the OT. It was a lot bigger than the original one but it still fitted in ok. I fired it up today - was very nervous. It worked and I'm still alive! It seems to me that the start up seems less sudden than before. Is this possible?

Ben

I just read Eskimo and BobL's posts, obviously I'm not an electrician!

Hello Ben,

The bigger capacitance will have a lower reactance (AC Resistance) than the original. This will increase the start up current through the start winding resulting in the softer start. As long as it gets up to speed quickly, it should be allright, the centrifugal switch will open the circuit, disconnecting the capacitor and start windings from the supply voltage.

Yep, its gets up to speed quickly but it doesn't give that sudden violent shock I used to get when starting up.

Might e too late, but Hare & Forbes had big fat 75uF / 250v units for $2 each. Down the back, at the clearance section.
