Started with some 20x20mm square bar stock and had to upset the ends.

It’s very awkward to work these heavy and long bars on your own over the anvil. The mass allows a lot of absorbed heat down the length where you want to hold the bar and the length out back is trying to fight you whilst your trying to be accurate with the hammer blows on the end. I used a support stand on the end to some success.

Had to do some research and test pieces for the square pass through. Lots of conjecture and and differing options on how to do this.

Drew out my long tapers on all the bars.

Slitting bars and they line up perfectly.

Main structural components forged. Lots of holes!

I should keep some sort of time sheet on these ‘things so I have an accurate account. I have been working on it for about a month on and off. I think I have about 6-7 Days in it.

There is still more components to go on it the should be a scroll/ribbon and it will need some sort of base.

That is some lovely smithing, very accurate!! I’m impressed. I’ve been wanting to try some of these techniques for a while but there is never enough time for play when I have knife orders to work on!

I know you said there was some conjecture, but what’s the thoughts behind slitting, rounding and then squaring, over punching and then drifting (like doing a hammer eye)?

It’s all about the way the metal moves. The thinnest part stretches the most becoming thinner still. So if you punch and drift you have less surface area and get a thinner wall on the drifted hole.

when you slit you slit to the finished hole size. The length of the slit = finial perimeter/diameter. Of hole. So wall thickness stays even.

drifting round is just a way of reshaping the slit evenly in transition to square. This is where it’s debated if it is needed. Some believe going straight to a square drift can catch on the corners and leave the sides thicker and stretch the metal thin at the top and bottom.

i know what i´m trying to say, I hope it translates lol

Translated perfectly and it makes total sense. A good piece of info for when I get around to having a go, thank you
