I figured that I could put something out there that may be of interest, but have stumbled at the get go. Where should I be starting.
Thanks.

Hi Phil,

Easy ! Just imagine that you are talking to someone. Describe things. If I came to your shed and said "what is that" or "that's nice", "How did you do that", how would you tell me about it ?

Anyway welcome to the great library, the forum that is. :2tsup:

Everyone has their own style, so read a few projects until you find a style that you like and perhaps use that as a template.

As a rough guide though, I would suggest start with stating the issue you have; why it came about and maybe why existing ways of dealing with it did not appeal or would not work.
Then,

Describe some of the more difficult things you did or had to work out (remembering we love pictures), especially if you haven't seen them done before. For more complicated items, putting in several steps is a good idea. As John has said, a conversational style is fine - think along lines of explaining it to someone with a similar knowledge level to you who has missed all the prelim stuff but arrives just in time to see the outcome.
Everybody here has gone in the wrong direction at some time, so if you tried something that didn't work, then include that. Someone may be able to point out what to do so it works next time (or why it was not really the right thing to do). There have been plenty of posts made where some has done something (good or bad) and others have chipped in with thanks because it has shown them how to get around a problem, avoid a problem or given them an idea for something they want to do but were stuck.
Finally, show us the result. You can also include what you would do differently next time (that is, what you have learnt) if you realise a different approach may have been quicker/ easier/ more accurate.

We do get students on the forum, so please don't include descriptions or photos of setups/ methods that are either not safe or look dodgy. Other members will soon jump on those but better to not have them in the first place. Also, acknowledge others if you have followed their methods or something they did inspired you. Doesn't have to me much (for example, 'I saw this in MEW no.XXX' or 'Fred's post (add link) made me think that...') but again, it might be useful for others to know what your triggers were.

Hi Phil and welcome to the mob,

You might outline the area of interest you have and how best your particular interest fits within our subforums. Even if you place welding, as an example within the ,say jewelry, it can be easily relocated, if that what you are worried about.

Members are generally interested to read how other members go about sorting problems how difficulties are overcome and if tools and equipment are utilised in new and interesting ways.

Please go ahead and tell us what you are up to. Pics are good but so are the details.

Hi Grahame.

I am keen to put something together to submit as something that I believe would be of interest to quite a few folk out there. My problem so far is .... I do not see any "pictures" in most of the topics. Now if I want to submit something with pictures, and say start something that members would like more info on, then (at this stage) I am lost.
For example I have been evolving a pretty efficient waste oil burner that is extremely simple to make and is highly effective. My first venture into recycling or disposing of waste oil in an acceptable manner was almost disastrous, but, that being about 15 years ago, is more anecdotal as how not to set up a waste oil burner.
I also have ideas for storage systems that I believe would be beneficial to the sheddies in general.
I need to know - where to start now with setting up a thread, with or without pictures. I really appreciate the spread of fantastic experience that is put together in this forum and would like to participate in a positive way. Giving as well as taking advantage of the gaps in knowledge and experience .

Welcome Phil.

Adding pictures to posts on this forum is clunky to say the least. You need to click on the "Go Advanced" button (bottom right) and select "Manage Attachments", then click "add Files" (top right), then "select files", choose your picture, then "upload files", then "insert Inline" if you want to place the pictures where the cursor is currently located, or "Done" to place the pictures at the bottom of the text.

I suggest having a crack at it and editing it if it doesn't turn out right.

Welcome Phil,

From my POV, I have developed as a poster over the years that I have been posting. I must confesss to not being the best at explaining things on the forum but I think I have gotten better too. There is no doubt that some members have a special knack to posting threads and explaining things, I'm not one of them but I still think I do OK.

When it comes to posting photos, I personally find it easier to post photos direct from my phone, especially since the photos are taken using my phone. However, I prefer to post the workding on a computer keyboard. My solution? I post all my wording on the computer, I then hit the "reply" button and send it. I then go on my phone, go into edit on my post I just typed, and add the pics direct from my phone. Then once done I save. Sure, there maybe a minute or so where my post makes references to photos that maynot be there yet but I generally do it straight away and no body notices.

Cheers

Simon

This is how I do it.

Move the cursor to where you want the pics.
Click on Insert Image icon from the icon menu.
375262
Follow the prompts and the images are inserted in line.

Phil, rather telling us that what you want to post could be of interest, just post something, there will be a few folks here that will make suggestions no matter how well you do your post :D and the response rate will determine if it is indeed of interest.
Seriously, just post something and see what sort of feedback you get.

Preferably I'd avoid mixing unrelated content in the same post.
Where you can, instead of starting a new thread, append or add your post to an existing thread on the same topics.
eg Append you storage idea at the end of this thread http://metalworkforums.com/f65/t202210-looking-tooling-storage-ideas
Put the oil burner story in the "Foundry" forum and look for a related thread to append to if applicable.

On the phone do you use a web browser or Tapatalk?

I use Tapatalk. I find it mostly works really well and very quick to upload pics too.
