I've posted this here because of what it is, an old turn of the century generator. At least that what it is displayed as.

I've not been able to find out very much about this lovely old generator. It has been restored at some time and given to the museum. There is a makers name on the casting, just to the left of the stator windings, but I wasn't allowed to climb up on the display to photograph it from above.

The handle on the brush gear is duplicated on the other side and lifts the brush gear clear of the commutator. The machine is driven by a flat belt on the right hand side. I did actually question whether this was possibly a motor, simply due to the small flat belt pulley. But nobody seemed to know. Also one of the bolts is missing on the slide rails.

A nice item to look at but lacks history. If anyone can add information I would be pleased.

Hi Baron, it looks as though there is another brush set hiding on the other side, those 2 brushes we can see are combined together and each one is huge, the length of the commutator indicates that a lot current flows through there.
The coils below maybe for high voltage? It looks like a big magneto.
Maybe this was the generator used in the Philadelphia Experiment :D

Yes there is another Identical pair of brushes and handle on the other side. Pushing the handle down lifts the brush holder and brushes clear of the commutator. All the wire that you can see is modern plastic covered stuff and I don't think any of the connections are correct anyway. I can't see this being a self exited generator. But without more information, I don't know.

I think it is a little small to provide enough power to make a battleship disappear. :)
