That's a nice looking engine, nice car too of course.
I've often wondered why there aren't more air cooled engines in cars, the idea seems to work well in the old beetle and I've always preferred air cooled bikes.
I had a good laugh at the cartoon in the post below the engine one too.
Cheers,
Greg.

Tatra built medium sized trucks for the Germans during WW2 , with the air cooled V8 as did Steyr of Austria . A club member here imported a WW2 Steyr 1500A with the air cooled V8 .

I worked on a ship a few years ago . That had 2 duitze 8 that were air cooled. One for each of the thrusters. Bow and stern.. they were a decent size engine. They ran beautifully. In less than ideal invoroment. . Like the shaft tunnel
It's hot and the ventalation isn't great.
I was very impressed with these engines but thought they were a strange choice. Considering lots of cooling water very close by. Usually you run across a small air cooled engine on ships . To run an emergency air compressor or fire pump. These were something else. Germans have made excellant air cooled engines . Be porsha.

Air-cooled engines need more allowance for thermal expansion which has a big effect on efficiency. Liquid cooling allows the engine temp to be regulated via the thermostat and cooling fan speed. It makes it easier to heat the car. My mum's beetle had terrible heating! Air cooled are noisier too.

I also prefer air cooled motorbikes.

Bugger the sedan.

In my opinion, the world needs more 8x8, Tatra truck trials comps.

There was a lot of cross-polination of ideas between Tatra & Porsche designers, Tatra being patent holders for many of the VW Beetle's features.
Interestingly, during the 1960s there was a legal settlement in Tatra's favour that VW paid.

The early Tatra V8s had spectacular specification and performance for the 1930s, and were popular with occupying SS officers during WW2.
Reportedly, that suited the Czechs, because the car's 100mph+ capability led to the deaths of some of them. The rear engine was "unsafe at any speed" of course.

I took this photo of one of them at the tech museum in Prague. The evident lack of a rear window I thought at first was a big negative, until I realised the driver could see quite clearly through the louvres over the engine. The window was inboard of the bodywork.
