I am looking for a VFD / Motor Combination for a 72" belt sander I am building. Probably about 1.5kW to 2kW. The thread on the Powertran VFD looks interesting and either the 2.2kW (PI160 2R2G1) or 1.5kW (PI160 1R5G1) look suitable. I was going to use an existing 3 Phase motor I had but I have repurposed that and will probably have to buy a motor to suit. A couple of questions:

1. Is it worth getting the PI160 or will a PI130 be enough (noting that I will have to go with a 1.5kW motor if I go with the PI130)?

2. Would an e-brake be useful on a belt sander - if so, how do I go about sizing the resistor?

3. The motor I am looking at is a Conon YX3-90S-2 which is $197 (https://cononmotor.com.au/product/1-5kw-2hp2800rpm-shaft-24mm-induction-electric-motor-3-phase-415v-compressor/) although I am a bit put off by the 24mm shaft. Does anyone have any other recommended suppliers for a 1.5kW 2800RPM motor?

Thanks,

Grant

I assume you are talking about a 6" wide sander?
If so I reckon you will need a 3HP motor - this means going with the PI160 or PI9130

Can't see a use for an E brake. Belt sanders slow down pretty quickly anyway due to the high friction loads.
Are you going to use some Carbon impregnated slip cloth to ease the friction?
Also are you incorporating an unsupported section of belt.

I extended the belt on my machine from 1.6 to 2m and left about 200mm of the belt unsupported - I use it a lot for curved edges - works a treat.

Now with dust extraction.

See also Linisher Score (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f155/linisher-score-183254)

This machine uses a 2m x 150 mm belt, and a 300 mm Disc it has a 3HP donk and a 4HP VFD.
When I used a 3HP VFD it tripped out too easily on changing speeds so I switched in a 4HP VFD.
I eventually worked out that I had to use longer acceleration and deceleration time to prevent tripping but by then I had used the 3HP VFD on something else so I left the 4HP VFD on it.

BobL,

Is a 72" x 2" so no where as big as your beast - I think a 1.5kW will be OK. Appreciate your thoughts on the e-brake.

I have emailed Nicole Chan for some pricing.

Yep 2HP will be fine.
