hi all,

My name is Jason and I am a young? (university age) metal and woodwork hobbyist.

I have been interested in making things for most of my life, and I am enjoying slowly building up a home workshop.

I have a metal working lathe and mill as well as a wood lathe. (cheap HAFCO-Sieg-Chinese-import kinda machines, but they work for what i do).

Recently I have acquired a Hercus 9" Lathe, which I am slowly restoring and I hope this forum will be a good place to share my progress and gain some knowledge.

thanks!

Hello Jason,

There is a Hercus section on the forum, could be some useful information for you there.

Welcome Jason. I hope you get some inspiration, encouragement and support via this forum. Feel free to post the details and photos of your latest project(s).
At the risk of sounding like an old timer (which I probably am....) it is good to have some young blokes getting into the wood/metal work 'hobby'. I started when I was in my early teens and have enjoyed learning new skills and techniques while making both useful and creative stuff for the last 40 plus years. It was not how I made a living, so I could enjoy it as a serious hobby. I think a lot of us also find we become quite popular with friends and relatives, because we can fix just about anything!
Nothing wrong with the HAFCO, Sieg etc gear. Good place to start. If you were in commercial production, or up the big end of town, you would do it differently.
Congratulations on the Hercus 9 inch lathe. I have two of these, one of which was a complete ground up resto. Lovely machines and a great piece of Aussie history. As Bill suggested, there is a section dedicated to Hercus machines on this forum and you will find lots of useful info and help there.
Cheers, Tony
