View Full Version : Hydraulic suction fitting

As part of my hydraulic log splitter project i needed a fitting for the suction side of the pump. The pump uses UN (O) fittings on both the suction and pressure sides. UNO fittings use an o-ring to create a seal rather than rely on the thread, they dont seem to be very common but not unobtainable. The suction port has a 1-5/8" UNO fitting and i needed one that went to a 1-1/2" barb fitting to take the suction hose. These can be ordered through my local hydraulic supplier but at $65 for the fitting i figured id make it myself.

Ended up working really well. Being a 12 tpi thread on my metric lathe, as usual i left the half nuts engaged. I used a part off tool to make a run out groove which also served as the o-ring groove.

The o-ring seats in a groove on the female side and so the fitting seats hard onto the female compressing the o-ring a defjned amount.

The biggest issue was the material. I asked for and purchased a piece of 50mm MS bright but there is no way its MS. It was very tough, machined beautifully with tc tooling but was tough as all.

I also machined some flats to aid in tightening it on.

Anyway. Happy withvthe result and saved some coin.

Cheers.

Good job. UNO is a pretty standard port size on valves and pumps. Normally you would have a UNO to JIC nipple in the port, then JIC ends on the hose. I would recommend using the wide style hose clamps with the bolt, not the more common worm drive type, it will hold and seal better.

Thanks Snapatap. OK so it's more common than I realise. I'm not in the hydraulics game so I have a lot to learn.

Yes, the pressure side has a un(o) to JIC-12 fitting that I purchased. All the other fittings in the pressure system use JIC-12 with 3/4" hose. The return is 1".

Thanks for the advice on the hose clamps.

Cheers,

Very nice work, only thing I would have done differently would been to have made the end barbed. Not that it matters on a suction.

Thanks RC. I did think about pulling out my radius turner to put a rounded barb on the end but as you said, in suction it's hardly going to come off. The hose is already a snug fit and the hose slides on 2". So yes, a bought one would have a barb but I think I'll get away with it.

Nice. I've used a fair bit a . 45deg double male fitting . The same o ring set up.
On the other end a piece of threaded pipe suitable size for suction hose.i prefer yours.

Thanks. Not shown in the photos, I also added a tapped hole in one of the square sections for a temperature sender. It will measure the hydraulic oil temp before it enters the pump.

Apparently the oil is good to about 100 degrees, however the seals in the pump (according the the manufacturer) are only rated to 80 degrees. So I figured it was more important to monitor the temp going into the pump and not the temp of the oil in the return line.

Wow rdmp sender in your of splitter.
I think if you have a big enough tank it won't go near those temps.

Wow rdmp sender in your of splitter.
I think if you have a big enough tank it won't go near those temps.I hope so but its all new to me so not sure what temps the oil will reach during an average run of couple hours splitting. The resevoir is about 70 litres and a 39 GPM pump.

It was only a cheapie gauge on ebay so figured why not since im making it!!
