View Full Version : Ball and Radius turner

I'm putting the finishing touches to a ball and radius turner.
Nothing new here but I probably made it unnecessarily complicated.
One thing I did differently was to put the feed nut inside this gave me a much better range of movement.
Its 100mm across the dovetail very smooth and it has a real solid feel
I did have one mishap when a 4 jaw chuck mounted on my rotary table rotated whilst I was milling the faces below the inserts.
I intend to make a real plate adapter in the future rather than screwing the chuck onto a threaded mount.
Of course the first thing I will turn with is a grip for its handle.

I turned my first ball for the handle today.
The cutter was a fraction of a mill low so there was a 0.5mm nib left on the end.
Still the ball was fine.
All good.

PS Check this dude out.
I don't understand a word but I love his work.

That’s a thing of real beauty. And something I imagine the beauty of which our respective wives would never quite understand :)

I don't know why you can't see the photos, they are jpg files.

The Russian sites are far more educational and actually show how to make equipment for yourself ,repair stuff which many commercial sites here would deem not worth it .

I have been following these as their sharing of information exceeds many of the other internet sites.

Polaris,
Thanks for the Post, nice job.

A question about the colour, if you will kindly indulge me?

Have you lightly blued the material or is it just a trick of the light?

Thanks

Grahame

Thank you Mike4

I too enjoy the Russian similiar to our own. I very muck admire the way these blokes can think out of the box and use the minimal equipment they do have and yet produce very functional and practical work. They seem tobe able to do more with less.

Grahame,
Thats what I like about these people , make do with what you have .

I am not being derogatory to any forum members either , just the throw away society we have become.

I would always see if some thing can be fixed rather than buying something that is not made to last.

Graham the blue color is just reflected blue sky light.
I took those photos in outdoor shade.
Good soft portrait light, but photographers adjust the blue out.
