View Full Version : Barrel Making

Hi everyone,
I have thought about making a little rifle for myself for a while now, but I have a major problem since I dont really have the proper tools to bore a barrel that would be nearly long enough. So I wanted to ask if it is possible to make some shorter sections and then weld those together or make the entire length from an upper and lower half. Is that possible or is the chance that the whole thing explodes in my face just too big?

My limited understanding is that neither of these methods would work. It takes very little bend in a barrel to cause it to fail.

The other consideration is that this is an Australian based forum and we have some pretty restrictive laws about gun making and I doubt any members would have actually made a rifle barrel as they are a very specialised precision part. Maybe if you looked at US forums where it is more likely people have made barrels. Also look at YouTube as I recall seeing a couple of videos on this subject.

Legally In Australia we can not advise you on any "step"in the "production " of a firearm if that firearm would be illegally made. We don't know for sure where you are in the World . Even if you are in Austria and it's not illegal there the offence of advising any step in how to make a gun from Australia might still be illegal here .

A big welcome to our humble Forum Evil_Doener

Hi everyone,
I Is that possible or is the chance that the whole thing explodes in my face just too big?

That is a real concern . Since we are Australians not Austrians, and some us who may possibly be descendants of convicts, jail from breaking our laws would still would bother us a lot.I am afraid we can't help you make a barrel.

Please take the following comments in the vein that they were intended not as an insult , not as a put down -but with your safety and well being a primary concern.

Given your introduction and description of what your thoughts on construction were alarming as a modern high speed propellant rifle barrel is a quite a bit of engineering and well beyond the scope of any diy engineering.

To weld sections of a such barrel together invites great injury. Even in the event of such a barrel not killing or maiming anyone when it was first fired, it still takes a huge amount of skill and knowledge to make an accurate barrel.

The other point is that police, law enforcement and anti terrorist departments are likely to take a good look at someone wanting internet advice to build a firearm. They might assume you are a terrorist,:D

My advice would be to contact the shooting organizations in your own country and take advice from them on what the applicable firearms laws are applicable in your homeland. Bear in mind if its legal,it is not something which can be done on the cheap.

That aside there are however a huge range of legal and safe metal work activities which metalwork forum members indulge and we welcome you to participate in any or all of them.
I am PMing you with a guide of how to navigate your way around our forum and the Terms of Use-the forums rules in other words.

Welcome and best wishes

Grahame

Austria -- a country to the south of Germany THAT DOESN'T HAVE kangaroos.

Australia -- a country well south of Germany that DOES HAVE kangaroos.

In all fairness the forum does only have a .com extension to its address so you might think it was in the US if you did not know.

The guy could be using a Tor browser and be anywhere in the World but show a certain IP address where he is not .

Do not even think about doing this - extremely dangerous.
