Can anyone tell me what this tool is used for?
The box says 1 1/4" BSP cap screw gauge. I have another which is 1 3/4"
I am cleaning out my father's garage and it is one of many items I cannot identify. Unfortunately I have limited knowledge in metalworking. Even "google" was no help.
Thanks

I would guess it was something to do with plumbing or conduit.. BSP = British Standard Pipe !.. a thread used in the old metal water pipes or conduit fittings... cannot help much further.

It's a style of go no go gauge i believe, your Bsp external thread goes in between the rollers and if it makes it past the first set but not the second its on size.

The tool is also known as a snap gauge.

Hi,

This is correct. The idea is the machine operator (usually a thread rolling machine) can use it quickly to determine if thread size is correct, without having to make an actual measurement. Thread measurement is a more skilled process.
