Post Drills Anonymous.......I think I'm an addict.

Some guys are doing an article on post drills for the HTPAA. They asked if they could come look at mine and get some photos.

Mine are tucked away all over the shed most are on the to do list, I just didn't realise how many are as found. Some just need a wash as the original paint is good, a few are seized with rust and one is beyond saving.

Thee are two more in the shed that aren't coming down

This one is a goner

I guess the worst part is I don't stop at post drills....I have at least 7 other hand crank drills of the type that clamp to the bench most are Goodall & Pratt, 6 bench top flat belt driven drills, the big Denbigh.

I think I need help.......that is polishing them all up for display so I can justify getting more lol.

All my drills have been acquired cheaply from $20-80. I'm amazed at how many get listed on eBay in the $250-700 none of which I have seen sell. Restoring one increases your investment in them but not the market value.

I have a Dawn 2 speed model which gets used most weeks, I find it very useful when drilling in stainless as it's slow and provides steady pressure and also when using up to 1" holesaws in plate steel.
It's unrestored but in good order.

Gavin, yours would be a 616 wouldn't it.

Yes, that's the one. I bought it for $30 at a sale about 10 years ago, gave it a wash down with kero and greased it up and it's been in use since. I use it for up to 3/4" holes in mild steel with a 1/4" pilot and 1/2" in stainless and it seems to cope well but I'm not sure that I'd push it much further.

Not sure mate, I think the large dose of wadkins cured you. When was the last time you had a post drill fix?

Gavin it's great to hear one is still in regular use!

If possible would you be able to take off your feed advance arm and photograph it on some graph paper for me. It should just be a matter of slideing the crank handle out of the way then just remove the split pin and it should come right off.

This part is missing on mine and I need to make one up.

I have been informed I obviously suffer from the ailment ."..drillpressious maximus vigrigartus " That's the clinical term.

Sounds like a forging job!
A friend bought (at recent TTTG members swap) a Buffalo that is missing similar piece. One day he'll tell us what model to get similar sketch.

These are the photos requested (I hope). The graph grid is 5mm, sorry for the metric scale but given that the graph paper was metric I figured that the rest of the measurements should follow suit.
Hopefully they help, if you need any more measurements just ask. Sorry about the grease but it's a working machine.

Not sure mate, I think the large dose of wadkins cured you. When was the last time you had a post drill fix?It must be a year and a half since I last bought a post drill - but that's only because the supply of cheap Silver drills has dried up over here. I have three searches on Trademe that I check every day for post drills (and other toys).

And Yes, Wadkins have distracted my restorations efforts :;

Cheers, Vann.

I went to a garage sale this morning at Springwood in the Blue Mountains and there were a few post drills for sale. About 150.
I didn't buy any, just an Oliver mitre trimmerand a Sydney made Osbourne chisel mortiser.

I wanted to go to that. But it is a 9.5hr drive and I have a preggy missus that was due 2 days ago so they are already messing with my shed stuff

I want these three...

366101

- the green one - a Silver Advance No.13 (or maybe No.12);
- the red one looks like a Silver Advance No.14 (or maybe No.13); and
- the brown (rusty/dirty) one in between - with the loose and fast pulleys - A Silver No.24 (or maybe No.23).

Unfortunately I don't want the cost of shipping them across the Tasman :C.

Cheers, Vann.

It did come with chisels.
I didn't take any pics of it or the Mitre trimmer and won't be picking them up until next Friday.
Very steep drive and people everywhere so the mate and I figured we'd come back later after paying for them and taking all the small loose bits.

...a Silver No.1 - sold for just $21 (might have gone a lot higher if I'd remembered to partake of the auction :B).

And this Dawn No.611 just sold for just $31...

There are a few things going on at home - and I took my eye off the ball....

The Buffalo 66 seems to have been the cover girl at one point.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170304/1475fc6657efc7ac6212badc8e6e0844.jpg
Having real trouble finding much on it or anyone who has one for some details/measurements.

Now the Silver Man. Co. No.#3 is a little more promising.

It is missing the cast crank handle (most drills just have a flat steel bar) and the original foot to mount the pillar.

The third post drill I picked up that weekend is a dead ringer for an Advance No.12

A bit of an ohs upgrade. Unfortunately when I went to collect he couldn't locate where the foot had gotten too, doh! Hopefully he will find it and get in contact. So the interesting thing is this drill is unbranded with no embossed lettering.
