View Full Version : Resizing pictures in Windows 10

I've just upgraded our main computer from XP to windows 10. I didn't really want to but the latest anti-virus upgrade seems to have fritz'd something so that it could only be used in safe mode. Work wise I need to use MS product because employers expect me to have a good Office skill-set otherwise I would have considered Linux or similar.
XP was fine for me; did what I wanted without any issues. One of the things I did like was the 'power toy' for resizing photos. MS, in their continued drive to impose their own vision on customers did not produce a version of that after XP.
Can anyone suggest a simple alternative? The official MS solution seems to be open each photo in paint and resize that way. I want something I can select a bunch of photos and with one or two clicks convert them to a standard size (typically 800x600), ready for posting/ emailing.

Try the free program "Irfanview".
OK in Win10.
Magic and powerful.
It's batch processing capability is amazing.

Takes a wee bit of use before you get a good feel for it.
Better and faster than Photoshop Elements 14 for basic stuff, and for batch processing, but PSE is still the better for image enhancement.

I have used Irfanview for probably 20yrs. It is a small program, but can have plugins added one of which gives EXIF and IPTC metadata info. It has a Batch Conversion/Rename function which will resize pictures. It also has a very powerful rename capacity for any file type. I use it to rename music files to suit my requirements.

Individual resizing is as quick as you mention, but I don't know about the batch resize.

Irfanview can batch resize as well as myriad other characteristics of an image file.
It can do multiple jobs, not just resize, on each file in a specified order.
For example, it can crop borders, then resize, then enhance colour, rename, etc, for each file in turn.
It can also modify the EXIF data, and reset the rotation etc, then save with your choice of JPG compression for each file that you have batch resized.

Just be sure to save your new files in a different folder to the originals, to avoid overwriting.

I once had Irfanview batch crop, then resize, then colour enhance, and rename in sequence, 1100 old 35mm slides which had been converted to JPG.

Just keep in mind this is essentially an image "viewer" program with lots of very useful tools added on.
It does not pose as, nor assumes to be, a Photoshop competitor.

But simply amazing in its capabilities.

I am not a windows guy (ironically because of my work) but back when i was this tool was what i used to do exactly this, you just drag to select the files you want to resize and right click then use the resizing menu.
Image Resizer for Windows - Lets you resize images by right-clicking. (http://www.bricelam.net/ImageResizer/)

Thanks Ralph
That resizer is very similar to the way that the 'power toy' used to operate and the sort of thing I was looking for. The Irfanview is powerful and good stuff too, but more complex than I need for this task - the resizing is basically to post on this forum and for sending emails.

I'll see how it goes. Thanks to Mike and Dean for their endorsements. I may have a go at Irfanview later.

I use photoscape as I found it better for basic stuff then Irfanview. It can not do batch processing though. Or maybe it can I just have not found it.

and I just looked and it can do batch processing.
