Reference others I've seen, the base seems shorter front to back.

I see the base is shorter on the oldy as it dont have the table outer support legs. Any other differences I missed ?

The biggest difference between old and 'new' is the old one has broze bushes for all rotating spindles and the 'new' one has all ball bearings. Old one has no provision for support foot for table/cube, 'new' one has it standard. For our purposes, it makes no difference really. Don't know the work envelope of the old version (Phil?), mine ('new' version, 1977) has 11"/280mm stroke.

Just had a look-see at the lathes UK Douglas reference. Douglas & Hercus ShaperAustralia (http://www.lathes.co.uk/douglasshaper/)
A machine is shown with a two legged support foot, and another machine is pictured with a single legged support foot. Both appear to have the same casting mount on the drip tray. Wonder why the change?

There is no pointer to indicate the stroke length, no biggy.
The work table doesn't swivel...dammit.
No clutch but I did manage to put a sewing machine motor on mine with a clutch.

Dunno how I missed the table difference. For starters, there's a big bolt head poking out the front of the swivel table version.
On the swivel table versions it looks like the 'cube' is removable giving another verticle work-holding surface.

Looking at the photos at Lathes UK it appears the later versions didn't have the 'Douglas' cast in though used a screw on plate? Allowing the potential to be sold under different nameplates perhaps?
Haven't seen any Hercus 270's yet.
