Just a few miles from Mt Rushmore the Crazy Horse memorial is underway, its a privately funded small workforce project that was started nearly 70 years ago. Government funding has been offered but is always refused.
Its going to take a long time to finish, there are still a few thousand cubic meters of granite to be carefully removed. In recent years a visitor centre has been built that generates substantial funds and should speed up progress.

This is the sculpture from about a km away, that head is 26m tall and is bigger than Mt Rushmore's 4 president's heads combined.

This a model of what they are aiming for, against the job in the background. To give another idea of overall size, the outstretched arm neck to fingertip, is 70m long. That opening under the arm has to be 30m long and will be an interesting engineering problem considering they are dealing with natural granite.

This is what they started with in 1948.

That's certainly some undertaking.

I remember reading about this in Popular Science, just found the article from 1964
Wonder if it will ever be finished?

the History Channel ran a program on Mongolia. The have a dirty big statue as well made of.....stainless steel! The guy who funded it is a multi millionare and wanted tourists to come. The statue sits on a hill and you can get inside and come out and admire the view from Genghis Kahn's hat.

The missus and I were there last year.
Absolutely awesome, puts Mt Rushmore to shame.
We came up thru Wounded Knee and it was awesome also.
The liquor stores just over the border are the most profitable in the state.
The yanks really know how to do it on a large scale.
