Greetings.

I thought that members of the Metalworking Forum, who are located in South East Queensland, may be interested in a Clearance Sale (it's not an Auction!) that is occurring this Saturday the 11th July 2015, starting at 7:00am.

The equipment being sold belonged to Joe Torony who passed away after an accident at home in early June 2015. As far as I know, Joe was not a member of this forum. But, one of the Forum Moderators may be able to check for sure whether Joe was a Forum member or not.

Joe was a Tool Maker by trade. He amassed a decent sized home metalworking workshop that he used actively during his retirement. The workshop is roughly about 60 square meters, and is chock full of machinery and tools.

I know forum members will ask me exactly what machinery and/or tools are in Joe's workshop.

My answer will have to be - I don't know for sure. Based on some work that Joe did for me a few years ago, I do know that he had a Lathe and a Milling Machine, along with welding equipment, as he used that equipment to make me some stub axles for a bit of kit I was working on a few years ago. I also remember Joe telling me that he bought most of his machinery at Auction and restored it himself.

If you plan to attend, I recommend that you get there at opening time, as Clearance Sales in this region are often frequented by Wholesale Used Tool Merchants who have a habit of snapping up everything of value very quickly - often paying way below a fair and reasonable market value.

At one Clearance Sale in this area in 2014, a wholesaler from Brisbane inspected the contents of the shed at opening time, then made the widow an offer of $20,000 cash for the lot. The widow did not know the real value of the machinery, so she accepted the offer straight away. People who were familiar with what equipment was in that shed, believe that the wholesale buyer got the lot for about 20% of it's real market value.

It would be nice if Joe's widow was able to sell some of Joe's tools and machinery for a fair and reasonable price, rather than the very low prices that the Used Tool Wholesalers will offer.

There is also a general Garage Sale on the property at the same time.

As stated in the attached advert, which was in the local newspaper this week, the address for the Clearance Sale is;

170 Mount Beppo Road,
Toogoolawah, Qld, 4313.

If you're looking the address up on a map or SatNav, make sure that you find "Mount Beppo Road", and NOT "Old Mount Beppo Road" !

I hope some people are able to attend.

RoyG

Damien,

Yes. But, not much there of interest to a woodworker. I picked up a couple of old hand planes (Stanley #5 and a #6) of unknown age at this stage. The sale was well attended, and I think about 50% was sold.

Is the remaining items able to be viewed? Do you know the widow? Damien.

Apparently, everything that didn't sell on Saturday has been consigned to an auction company in Brisbane. I don't have any details regarding which auction company - maybe there will be details in our local paper when it happens. I'll post more detail if I find out anything.

Sad to see this. Joe was here with me 4 days before the accident and was positive about his future "playing in the shed". Joe was a work mate from early 1980s to 1991 but kept in regular contact since then. He'd just picked up an dividing head for his milling machine at a sale down here to add to his workshop collection.

It is a shame I missed the auction.
