I do realize that this is not specifically metalwork related.
BUT...........................................................................
The only forums I use here are the metalwork ones, So please bear
with me.
I have over the years made what I consider to be many new friends all over the country
and overseas through this forum, Some I have met personaly and some by email and even
phone.
So it got me to thinking.......:o

What is in our forum name's.??? I thought it might be nice to get to know each other a little better
by examining the reason we call ourselves what we do.

For some of us it is quite easy and for some the name and reason could be quite imaginative.
I'm sure everyone on the forum would love to hear YOUR NAME'S STORY..

Me first....
As I am not the most imaginative person. Matthew_g translates to my first name and surname initial..

A lot of years back my young son Josh "helped" build some particular project (for the life of me I cannot remember what) and jokingly I said it was made by Brosh - a little bit of Bryan and a little bit of Josh. So to this day anything thing that comes out of the shed is made by Brosh. My son is now into his 4th decade so the name has been around for a while. My second son is Nick, and for a while we had "made by Brick" - but he's not as frequent down the shed these days - he spends his time flying helicopters. For those who saw the NRL Grand Final, Nick was pilot in the Blackhawk at half time.

May your days be many and your worries few :U

My eldest daughter and I got interested in the Series "The Sopranos". All the characters seemed to have a name that ended in "y" (Tony, Pauly ......you get the idea) so one night after it had finished I told her if I was on the show they would call me Roddy Chambezio. She thought it was quite a good thought. Anyway about this time I decided to join the forum so I used chambezio as my "handle". My name is quite English in origin Rod Chambers. "Burned Out Chip" well that's because I had to retire early from being a Carpenter due to my nerves giving way.

I have often wished I'd thought of something witty when I chose my forum name - after smiling or puzzling about some of the more imaginative ones on this site..
Mine is obviously a concatenation of Joe Hovel ... my name.
Is it possible to change your name short of closing an account and re-registering?

Mine is pretty unimaginative as well. Through my young life my nickname was always Gibbo, from my last name Gibson. When i started my apprenticeship the guys decided Gibbo was no good.....so they called me "Huey" As i am lazy it got changed to Ueee, but to this day i have some suppliers that still write Huey on my orders.

On the note of Signitures, I notice Joe has just changed his to include his machines. Fred (bigshed, another no brainer:D) and maybe others also have a list of their machines. I think it is a good idea cause it can get hard to remember what everyone has, and it helps to fill in the blanks on certain posts.

Yep, back in Nov 2006 whilst recouperating after having triple stents added to my bodily inventory, I came across this forum because I couldn't do much in the shed.

So, I decided to register, but then I was asked for a monniker, didn't have a clue, asked SWMBO who said "well you have a big shed", the rest as they say............

I soon learned that my shed wasn't that big anyway:B (48x24ft)

Well this is AWSOME !!!
I am really enjoying not only the decipher of the
Name but also the story behind it.
I believe this thread will bring our little family even closer
together.

I started by typing all of the preferred ones in and found they were all taken.
Steamwhisperer sounded ok at the time considering my job is to attempt to coax Steam Engines back to life.
That was until I hit submit. I have been embarrassed ever since:-

Hi Phil, I had this mental picture of you whispering to a big steam engine, and then it magically comes to life.... you've shattered the image.. :D

As far as my name goes, I plead lack of imagination....

Chief Tiff
3rd Oct 2012, 01:35 PM
Short for "Chief Petty Officer Marine Engineer Artificer"; which was the rank I held in the Royal Navy...um....quite a few years ago now. I transferred over to the Oz navy and was annoyed to discover that although Artificers haven't been around for a couple of decades or so, the Chief Marine Technician in charge of engines is referred to as "The Tiff"; a purely honorific and undeserved title :p

HI Ray,
you should probably keep that image. You have just reminded me that the throttling valve on the Phoenix engine needs fixing :D

Abratool

My Forum name was a quick decision at the time.
ABRATOOL was the name of my business for about 35 yrs or so.
The name... represents Abrasive Tools.
I specialised in Abrasive manufacture & Abrasive Tools (Hand held Air Tools of a speciality type)
Manufacture of Abrasive Belts from 1/4" wide to 12" wide by any length, overnight service.
So in essence I still think of myself as ABRATOOL.
Old habits are hard to give up.
These days its more into precision metal & woodworking, general tinkering, fiddling with machines & reading this Forum
I would describe myself as an excessive Tool & Machine Nut. Love it !!! Learnt & learning heaps from all you blokes, thanks.
A good life!
regards
Bruce

Thanks Bruce, i have always wondered about your forum name. I always thought of it as a shortened "abracadabra tool"

Dingo Dog
6th Oct 2012, 11:09 PM
My name comes from a dog I once had. A real good companion who saved my life twice. Picked up in Cape Your back in 1983, as the property owner was going to put him down, due to him chasing pigs and getting the female dogs preggos more then actually rounding up cattle. He was a Red Heeler with 1/8th dingo in him.

Uh-oh, look out guys here comes that boring barsteward Geoff, pretend you haven't seen him.
My name is obvious from my interest in boring tools, specifically braces and any tool with the square tapered tang that can be chucked in a brace. But also as a matter of fact braces ARE BORING! For instance, on the Hand Tools Unpowered forum if someone asks a question about a Stanley No 4 smoother (whatever the hell that is ) they will get 40 or 50 replies, on the other hand ask about a Stanley A144-12in and you'll be lucky to get 3 responses and some blank looks. I'm not complaining, no one forced me into my hobby, its all self inflicted, and I'm enjoying it.
And the "try not to be late but never be early"? I was a premixed concrete delivery contractor for 26 years and that piece of advice was given to me when I first started. Was it good advice? Just ask any grano worker how he feels about a load of concrete showing up 15 minutes before the time he ordered it, and you'll get your answer.

Regards,
Geoff.

Mine was a no brainer. I spend all day touching inverter welders.... I spend most of the night dreaming about inverter welders. Sometimes I get distracted with gas turbines (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGR14OAcJQA).

G'day all

When a young tacker my father gave me a personal nickname "Qball" that was only used by my parents to me. When you have the first name Quentin, you find that not many people shorten it or develop a nickname from it - usually some other logic is at work.

When I joined this forum, I had to use something, so I went back into my history for it but changed the spelling.
Nothing very significant.

Like many others seem to have found, in this endeavour you fumble around trying to think of something and stumble onto one that is accepted and or not already taken.

One day, I might even have lost enough hair to qualify for this moniker.

Regards

Quentin

desbromilow

desbromilow is Des Bromilow - not real imaginative is it?
I use other psuedonymns on other forums, but mostly to avoid conflict fallout - sitting on a news forum, it doesn't matter what you think of the poli-ticks of OZ, SOMEONE wil take it personally, and offensive - even if it is simply to suggest all poli-tick learn and practise the same manners whilst representing me, as what they do to gain my vote.

Since my eng/mech/elec/other forums are not so heated, I have no problem disclosing my true identity.

Bit late I know but I have been too busy to do much more than look at current subscriptions. Look at not read! I have only been reading the EBay / Auctions thread regularly.

My name as I believe I explained in my GDay post or summat, is based on the fact that I used to work for an engineering company when a lot younger. This is where I got my love of working with metal. This is the "eng" part. The old and new are references to my old work in engineering and my new found work as a hobbiest now that I have the space for equipment and the luck mostly to obtain it.

Seems to be more imaginative than most LOL. Oops, there go the tickets.

HI:) ALL,
Well My User Name is quite simple steran50 it consists of the the first 3 letters of My first (stewart) and last Name (rankin) the 50 however doesn't mean anything. Perhaps I should change the 50 to 70 for 1970 the Year I was Born. I have thought about changing my User Name to something else but, I don't know what to though. How does one change their User Name anyway if we want to ?.

Hi, I'm a newbie here and it has been many years since I used a lathe. My name here is the year of my lathe from the posted serial number info.. For those who view other places I am BMWFatherFigure on Bimmerfest and MINIFatherFigure on North Americian Motoring.

Those names came about because my daughter calls me 'Father Figure', as every child needs one.

I got my lathe to allow me to do more tasks in relation to my vehicle restoration projects.

Regards to all, Colin :)

Ok, so the name I use reflects one of my other hobbies. I collect crystals. I have an aquamarine, which is one of several varieties of beryl, in the collection and it just came to mind to use it when I joined. I added the "bloke" to remove any confusion (in other peoples minds :U) over gender. My wife found the aquamarine photo that goes with my posts.

Cheers
