Ok. I have just processed my first package through Shipto forwarding company since the new GST rules changed.
As i suspected, they calculate the GST based on the amount you enter in the customs declaration.
So its a self reporting or "honesty" system.
Essentially you can put in whatever valve you want and your GST will be 10% of that amount. Falsely declaring the amount is not without risk though. Ive had customs contact me several years ago wanting proof of purchase for all my overseas purchases.
Anyway, thats how that works.
Edit: I note that they also charge GST on the shipping costs too. While I'm not smart enough to come up with an argument against it, I still think it's a bit rich. I'll be factoring that amount in when I fill out my declaration.

At retail, it's illegal to advertise things here in Australia without showing the whole price including GST. It's not OK to show it as a separate amount.
But, the "buy it now" prices shown on ebay (possibly elsewhere) don't comply with this rule.
I wish they did, as it's another thing to remember/forget when shopping.

It is illegal to advertise a price which the consumer can see which excludes GST.
You are allowed to quote to a business Excluding GST, but it is not recommended to do so. They recommend that a business when quoting to another shows a buy price and then a GST allowance and a Total Price.
A lot of engineering places still advertise ex GST.
Excentric Engineering used to..he definitely did when I bought my tool holder
Assett Machinery still does.
And there are others.

Well, it seems that if you buy from a seller in the US who is participating in the eBay Global Shipping program it is displayed.
This is a 54 year old second-hand tool post I just bought from the US - notice the import charges are actually 13% so it seems that there is a fee on top of the 10% to actually collect it.

This is one of the linked 'fine print' descriptions for GST collection for Australia.

Sucks that second hand gear is dragged into this.
