Yes as above the top plate needs to be level and flat and square/parallel to the disk, sharpening fixture is mounted using a magnet, needs to be flat for repeatability.

Yeh, I know I can get gauge plate and tool steel application does not warrant that expense, machining is the other alternative, might break out my belt sander and see how that goes.
